High School Zone: Long Island NY

Things are heating up — in more ways than one. Last weekend, we had one of the nation’s premier rivalry games, the Woodstick Classic. This weekend, we have another one, as Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown meet for the Murphy Cup. (Just a quick FYI – you can check out that game on Cablevision. Don’t let the […]

Garden City at Manhasset. Yorktown at Darien. Ridgefield at Somers. Rye at Put Valley. Suffern at North Rockland. They’re here. The hype is over. Now it’s time to play those little things called games. Welcome to Showdown Saturday. We’ve previewed it extensively. (Click here if you have doubts.) Now it’s time to get to it.

I only wish I could make it to all of them. Realistically, three is going to be a stretch. But I’m going to try. (Other than the postseason tripleheaders, this will be a first for me. So stay tuned, my friends.)

Most now view the FCIAC championship chase as a two-horse race between defending champion Darien and Ridgefield. Those two teams don’t meet till mid-May. But we may get a bit of an idea how the teams compare tonight when Darien visits Wilton.

Jack Doherty of Lakeland/Panas hopes to earn all-America honors for a second straight season. (Photo by Ray Gallagher) There’s a smattering of games on tap for today, folks, but nothing I would consider describing with our special LaxLessons.com term “mega matchup.” And with rain (and potentially lots of it) on the way any way, what […]

This was the year it was all supposed to be different for Yorktown. The highly touted ‘Huskers were finally going to slay the dragon that had been their nemesis for 30-plus years. Ward Melville was, by all accounts, supposedly in the midst of a rebuilding phase and simply not the juggernaut of a Long Island […]

It’s one of the most tradition-rich high school lacrosse rivalries in the nation. And one of the most one-sided. Since 1980, Ward Melville vs. Yorktown has been a heated annual affair. It’s one of the marquee matchups in the region on tap for today. GET YOUR LAXLESSONS.COM PLAYER PROFILE NOW… • Upload your profile now […]

There’s a battle for the ball during the showdown between Garden City and Lynbrook between GC’s Brian Fischer and Lynbrook’s Alex Maini earlier this week. Garden City pulled out a 5-4 win. A couple of big showdowns in Suffolk. Some crucial games involving teams from Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. It should be an interesting Thursday throughout the region today.

Yesterday was Super Tuesday with plenty of big games that may foreshadow what we see in the postseason. In light of the matchups now in store, I guess we can call today Wild Wednesday.

West Islip has been a model of consistency since the debut of the LaxLessons.com Top 25 regional rankings. The Lions have held on to the top spot since the outset. But there has been plenty of commotion in the other spots, folks. And that continues this week.

Tomorrow, Long Island will take center stage with some colossal confrontations on tap. But today, Section 1 is in the spotlight. Let’s call it Super Tuesday.
