Matt Dillon, a recent graduate of Emmanuel College’s Class of 2016 where he played lacrosse, died in a tragic accident this past weekend, the university announced in a statement.

Details of the accident involving the political science major from Bedford, NH who aspired to be a lawyer, were not released.

“Matt was known by members of the college community as a remarkable young man with a radiant smile and great attitude about life,” Emmanuel president Sister Janet Eisner said in a statement emailed to the college community. “Described as a tremendous friend and fantastic teammate on both the Emmanuel varsity lacrosse team and the Model United Nations Club, Matt will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.

“We ask that you keep Matt’s faculty, friends and his family including his sister Meg, ’10 and his brother Pat, ’11 in your thoughts and prayers.”

At Emmanuel, he was a reserve player for the Saints who excelled academically. He was named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Academic All-Conference team.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Dillon, a defenseman, played three years of both football and lacrosse at Bedford HS. He was selected to the Massachusetts all-state first team in lacrosse his senior year in which he helped lead Bedford to a 19-0 season. He was also named an all-state finalist on the football squad.
