From press release and staff reports

Mike Daly, who guided the Tufts University men’s lacrosse program to three NCAA national championship titles while boasting the nation’s highest scoring offense, has been named the head men’s lacrosse coach at Brown University in an announcement made by Bears’ Director of Athletics Jack Hayes.

Daly, who becomes the sixth Brown men’s lacrosse coach since 1963, takes over a Brown program that advanced to the NCAA Division I National Semifinals, posted a school record 16 wins, captured the Ivy League Championship for the second straight season and returns three All-Americans, including Tewaaraton Award winner Dylan Molloy ’17.

“Mike Daly is a terrific coach, has a proven track record of success and is the architect of the offense that has brought Brown so much success over the last two years,” said Hayes.  “He has experience recruiting quality student-athletes who excel equally on the field and in the classroom.”

Daly posted a record of 244-83 in 18 seasons as head coach at Tufts, with nine NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NESCAC titles. His Tufts teams won national championships in 2010, 2014 and 2015.

“I want to thank Brown President Christina Paxson and Athletic Director Jack Hayes for the opportunity to coach and mentor at one of the leading institutions in the country,” said Daly. “Brown features one of the nation’s premier lacrosse programs with a long tradition of success, and I’m honored to be taking over the program.”

Tufts led the nation in scoring last spring with 402 goals in 23 games for a 17.48 per game average. The Jumbos won their seventh consecutive NESCAC title and finished the year with a 20-3 record, falling in the national championship game. Daly’s senior co-captain John Uppgren was named the USILA Co-Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Attackman.

Daly is among the top 10 active coaches for winning percentage and is in the top 20 for victories. Among all-time DIII coaches, he is in the top 10 for winning percentage and top 30 for wins.

Prior to his promotion to head coach of men’s lacrosse at Tufts in 1999, the team had compiled a 3-25 record in the 1997-98 seasons combined.

A two-time USILA F. Morris Touchstone National Coach of the Year (2010 and 2014), Daly’s teams have won 20 or more games four times and made five appearances in the national championship game. Daly oversaw a prolific Tufts offense that scored 423 goals in 2014 to set an NCAA record for a single season for all divisions.

Eight team members were named 2016 USILA Scholar All-Americans, the most on any team in all three divisions. The Jumbos were also deeply involved in the community with Team IMPACT, whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening illnesses by establishing a team-based support network.

A 1995 Tufts graduate, Daly was a two-sport athlete for the Jumbos, and received a Masters in Education from Tufts in 1997. He and his wife Norah, have a daughter, Fiona, and son, Liam.

What They Are Saying About Mike Daly…

Dom Starsia ’74, former head coach at Brown and Virginia – “This is a great hire for Brown, and an exciting opportunity for Mike.  I think I speak for a lot of Brown alums when I say we are ready to support Mike as he works to maintain Brown’s position among the nation’s lacrosse elite.”

Mike Pressler, head coach at Bryant  –  “Mike Daly is a talented and innovative coach who has a proven track record of success.  His fast-paced offense is suited for players and fans. The bright future of Bruno Lacrosse is in great hands!”

Bill Tierney, head coach at Denver –  “Mike has successfully brought a football mentality to the game of lacrosse. Since I’ve met him, he’s always sat in the front row with a yearning to learn, watch and listen. He’s someone who has appreciated what others have given him, and he’s always willing to pay it back. A great hire for Brown.”

Peter Lasagna ’82, former Brown head coach and current head coach at Bates  –  “Mike’s record speaks for itself. He inherited a lacrosse program at Tufts that didn’t have national title aspirations and turned it around into one of the dominant programs in the nation. I have a lot of respect for Mike, who elevated the standards in the league and made every program better. He’ll do a great job at Brown.”

Ryan Molloy, Tufts Lacrosse, 2011 captain and starter on 2010 National Championship team; brother of Brown’s Dylan Molloy ’17, 2016 Tewaaraton Award Winner  – “Coach Daly is a players’ coach in every sense of the phrase. He allows everyone on the field to play fast and reach his fullest potential.”
