It all started a few weeks ago when a post on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section announced that the first Class of 2020 commitment was forthcoming.

It continued in the hours leading up to Bay Shore (NY) lefty attackman Brennan O’Neill’s March 18 verbal commitment to Penn State with a round of gossip on social media speculating the verbal was about to be announced.

Those overreactions, as always, were a bit humorous — to put it politely. Still, the fact that a 13-year-old eighth-grader (pictured above, far right) could decide on a college destination is certainly a new thing.

And one that’s now attracted widespread media attention that has followed earlier coverage and the initial LaxLessons Lacrosse Insider initial report.

“An eighth-grader on Long Island already knows where he’s going to college,” begins a feature that aired  Thursday on WABC-TV in New York. “Brennan O’Neill plays lacrosse and is so good he’s committed to Penn State.”

O’Neill played in the inaugural Warrior World Series of Youth Lacrosse in Denver this past summer, scoring six goals in one game. And yes, folks, he made Bay Shore’s varsity team. As previously reported on Lacrosse Insider, O’Neill is likely to enroll at nearby CHSAA power St. Anthony’s this fall.

The 6-foot O’Neill scored 10 goals, earning All-Tournament honors at Maryland’s Inside Lacrosse Invitational this past July.
