Lacrosse Insider: Saturday score predictions

There’s little doubt Yorktown will once again be one of the top boys lacrosse teams in New York once again this year.

The Huskers, who won the Class B state title in 2014 and advanced to the state semifinals last year, will be bolstered by an outstanding defense that features an array of college-bound standouts.

As always, Yorktown’s schedule allows it an opportunity to see how it fares against premier out-of-state competition.

The first test is in Yorktown’s opener Saturday. The Huskers take on Cathedral Catholic of California in a 10 a.m. game at West Point. Cathedral Catholic is coming off a 13-8 season, highlighted by a mid-season stretch in which the Dons won seven times in eight games.

It will be a full day of action on Long Island with plenty of preseason and regular-season action.

The game of the day features defending New York Class B state finalist Manhasset hosting Smithtown West at 11 a.m.

In a Westchester vs. Suffolk battle, Section 1’s Pelham and Section 11’s Mount Sinai open the season with a 7 p.m. game at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. St. Joseph’s will be adding a collegiate men’s lacrosse program that will take the field in 2017 and announced that former Shoreham-Wading River head coach Tom Rotanz will be guiding the team.

Also on LI, Bayport-Blue Point hosts Port Jefferson and Patchogue-Medford visits Bellport in a pair of 10 a.m. games.

Action in the Coaches vs. Cancer Preseason Tournament at Veterans Park in Northport starts at 9:15 a.m. and continues with scrimmages through 2 p.m.

Participating teams include host Northport as well as Huntington, Commack, Kings Park, Half Hollow Hills West, Half Hollow Hills East, Harborfields and Eastport-South Manor.

In another scrimmage of note, two-time Suffolk Class A champ Smithtown East visits Lindenhurst in a 10 a.m. game at Lindenhurst Middle School.
