It’s something he’s been considering for months.

But in the fall, Scott Bulkley decided to make the move. And now it’s official.

After six seasons as head coach of the boys lacrosse team at Greenwich, Bulkley has taken over the varsity program in his newly adapted hometown of Newtown.

Bulkey, who went 88-39 with the Cardinals and led Greenwich to the FCIAC title in his first season as Greenwich coach in 2010 and its first-ever state title in 2014, takes over for Glenn Adams at Newtown HS.

Bulkey and his family relocated to Newtown three years ago after living in Darien, where Bulkley was an All-America standout before going on to play collegiately at North Carolina. Bulkley was an assistant under his former high school coach, Jeff Brameier, at Darien before becoming head coach at Greenwich.

Newtown, which went 11-6 this past spring, opens and ends the regular season with two major tests: vs. Fairfield Prep in its opener and against Staples to wrap up the regular season.

An official announcement regarding Bulkley’s successor at Greenwich is expected to be made shortly. LaxLessons has learned it is a very familiar name in Fairfield County lacrosse circles. Look for that report now on our Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Scott Bulkley on his decision.

When did you first consider making the move and what were the factors in doing it?
When the Newtown job opened up, I sat down with my wife (Kristen) and kids to discuss the idea of me moving closer to home and the real possibility of coaching my son in high school.

When my son Jake asked me to please coach him, my decision was very clear. This decision was based on family. Coaching my son and spending more time with my family were the major factors.

I usually missed dinner with them almost every night during the season. Now, that is not going to happen.

What do you think the potential is for the Newtown program?
I think Newtown is a town that has great, supportive families and very athletic kids. So their potential is very high.

All the lessons and ideas I learned from my time in Darien and Greenwich I am now instilling in Newtown. There is going to be a very direct connection from the youth program to the high school program.

Building a solid foundation of young, smart lacrosse players is my goal.  We want to develop into a program that can compete consistently with the lower Fairfield County teams.

What were the highlights during your seven years as Greenwich head coach?
My highlights would be the opportunity to coach and get to know so many great young men.  I loved being the coach of Greenwich and I considered those players as an extension of my family.

Helping them build the program up to what it is today is very satisfying.  Obviously winning the FCIAC and the first ever state championship is beyond special.

When we beat Chaminade last in 2014 was probably the biggest win for that program as it announced to the tristate area that Greenwich was for real.

Newtown opens the season vs. Fairfield Prep and closes the regular season vs. Staples. Are you looking forward to these big tests at those points in the season?
To be considered the best, you need to play and beat the best teams. This is step in that direction. Yes, we are looking forward to those games as much as rest of our schedule.

Newtown is going to continue to seek out the best possible teams so that our program can grow and evolve into a great program.  We are going to show up each and every game with same attitude. Play hard, play fast, play very smart and never back down from anyone.
