Our latest Class of 2019 verbal comes from upstate New York, where defender Sutton Boland just gave Penn State its first freshman commit, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.
The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Boland is a member of the Victor HS program that defeated Manhasset to win the 2015 Class B state title.
Boland, who visited Penn State in early September, is an athletic player who also excels in football and ski racing.
He is an aggressive player with good speed, a high lacrosse IQ and strong communication skills.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Sutton on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision
The core values of the Penn State lacrosse program: hard work, passion, selflessness and discipline.
I felt like I had an immediate connection with the coaches and the program.
My heart kept going back to Penn State.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
In my lacrosse tournament travel my family and I have visited many campuses.
It was a tough decision after visiting University of Michigan but my heart kept going back to Penn State.
Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
At this point, I am undecided but leaning towards a business degree.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths include overall speed, lacrosse IQ, communication, and aggressive play. I have a very natural competitive nature on the field and I am very driven.
What areas of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on all levels as I can improve at everything. One thing I really want to focus on is accurate stick checks, and you can never have too much knowledge for this game.
How were you introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
In fifth grade, I was introduced to lacrosse by my youth football coaches I will never forget when they told my dad (Edward Boland) to get a long pole in my hand as soon as possible.
I was a baseball player and once I had the opportunity to play in youth then on to travel it was an easy and exciting decision for me. I come from a very active family.
I have been a ski racer since I was in second grade. I have been playing football since I was 8 years old. I love all sports.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I have played for Sweetlax for three years and have attended many tournaments.
I have my first showcase this July- Maverick Showtime.
Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
There are so many people I could thank for getting me here. All the coaches and players I have ever learned from. The most important people in my life are my family especially my Mom and Dad who have given me the support and guidance I needed to get here. My first lacrosse coach Eric Calinese.
A special thanks to Mike Russell for seeing the potential in me and pushing my Dad to get me a stick. Coach Pezzimenti for personally teaching me many Defensive skills I use in every game. Larry Digiovanni for guiding me through this exciting process and seeing the potential in me.
Finally, Sweetlax for giving me the opportunity to play at the next level that has made me the player I have become and am still working on becoming.
