He’s the second member of his family to commit to Division I lacrosse, but Brett Makar has the distinction of being the first member of the Class of 2018 from national power and 2014 New York state champ Yorktown to make his college choice.

The defenseman gave a verbal to the University of Maryland on Wednesday, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

Makar’s brother Tyler, also a defenseman, is also a football/lacrosse standout at Yorktown. The rising senior committed to St. Joseph’s. Their cousin, Sean, is an attackman/midfielder at Lakeland/Panas.

Makar is an athletic and agile player known for his intense style of play, strong communication skills and outstanding lacrosse IQ. He is also an effective and relentless shutdown defender.

The 6-foot, 177-pound Makar, a righty who performed well at the Maverik Showtime National Lacrosse Recruiting Spotlight, drew interest from a variety of major D-I programs.
