Two first-time winners, including Niskayuna (shown celebrating above) highlighted the New York state championships held in a tripleheader Saturday at Vestal High School near Binghamton.
New Jersey also crowned its Tournament of Championships winner.
Here’s the rundown of Championship Weekend in New York and New Jersey.
A – Niskayuna 13, West Genesee 10
Niskayuna, which became the first Section 2 (Albany area) team to win a state title,
Villanova University-bound senior goaltender Nick Testa was MVP for Nisky, which was making its third title-game appearance. University of North Carolina-bound Aidan O’Brien had five goals for the Silver Warriors, Duke-bound John Prendergast had four goals, Syracuse University-bound Lucas Quinn three goals and Siena College-bound Dylan Pantalone excelled on faceoffs.
Nisky ends the season 21-2. West Genesee wraps up the season 18-3.
B- Victor 17, Manhasset 8
Victor’s start wound up being Manhasset’s finish. Despite a spirited comeback attempt, ‘Set could not overcome an 8-0 deficit after the first quarter.
Midfielder Dan Barrow, a junior heading off to Mercyhurst, had six goals for Victor. Syracuse-bound Jamie Trimboli had three goals and four assists and Drew Collins three goals and three assists.
Dimitri Papadopoulos, who took over in goal for ‘Set to start the second quarter, played well, making 10 saves. Tristan Lerlan started the game dominant on faceoffs for Victor in a much-anticipated matchup with UPenn-bound Tyler Dunn of Manhasset. Dunn and Matt Gavin each had two goals for ‘Set.
Victor (22-0) is the third Section 5 team to take a state title, joining Penn Yan (2001) and Canandaigua (2009). Manhasset ends the season at 16-6.
C – Cold Spring Harbor 9, Cazenovia 8
Cold Spring Harbor overcame a 3-1 early second-quarter deficit to win its second state title and first since 2006.
Fairfield University-bound sophomore midfielder Taylor Strough had four goals for the Seahawks, with all the goals assisted by Cornell-bound faceoff specialist Matt Licciardi, who also had a goal and dominated faceoffs in the second half. Loyola University-bound Riley Cox had two goals and an assist and Virginia-bound Ian Laviano two goals. Goalie Matt DeGennaro made 10 saves.
Cazenovia, making its third title-game appearance in four years, was led by PJ Brown’s three goals. Cole Willard had two goals.
CSH ends the season 21-2, Cazenovia 18-2.
New York state brackets:
NJ Tournament of Champions final at Kean University
Bridgewater-Raritan 16, Bergen Catholic 13
Bridgewater-Raritan took its second T of C title in the last four years and finished the season 23-0 in the process.
Army-bound goaltender Luke Konen came up big in the second half. Griffin Figel and Figel reached the 100-point mark for the season. Brian Kolen had three goals. UPenn-bound Richie Lenskold excelled on faceoffs.
Bergen Catholic, making its first T of C final, ends the season at 18-6.
