Manhasset’s first-year coach is a familiar one in the world of lacrosse.

Former collegiate and professional lacrosse star Keith Cromwell (shown above being inducted into Rutgers University’s Hall of Fame) is eager to start his first season with the Indians, who open the season Friday against Suffolk power Commack. Game-time is 4:30 p.m. at ‘Set.

The 37-year-old Cromwell replaces Bill Cherry, who was fired in July after the school said it completed a review of the program despite a 15-4 season that ended with a loss to archrival Garden City in the Nassau County Class B title game. Cherry led Manhasset to the Class B state final in 2015.

The all-time leading scorer in Rutgers history, Cromwell is also associate head coach of the MLL’s Long Island Lizards. In his lone season as head coach at Locust Valley HS last spring, Cromwell guided the Falcons to a 16-1 season with the only loss coming to two-time state champ Cold Spring Harbor in the Nassau County Class C title game.

Cromwell also previously served as an assistant at Rutgers and under Bill Cherry as offensive coordinator at Manhasset, He’s expected to bring a high-octane style, fun-to-watch offense to Manhasset.

The Hickville native was a three-time USILA Lacrosse All-American and two-time team captain while playing for the Scarlet Knights, where he amassed 152 goals and 266 points. Cromwell also earned the Coursen Award (Best Athlete) from the Rutgers athletic department in 2001.

After graduating with a degree in Labor Relations, Cromwell entered Major League Lacrosse (MLL) with the Long Island Lizards, winning rookie of the year in 2001, and the National Lacrosse League (NLL) with the Philadelphia Wings. He also started his coaching career at Yale, working as the recruiting coordinator and assisting with the offense for one year in New Haven.

Additionally, Cromwell has worked as a teacher, earning a master’s degree in Childhood Education from Long Island University in 2007.
