As a tackle in football, Steven Veteri is right in the center of the action.

It’s the same way on the lacrosse field where the Yorktown High School (NY) rising senior is especially dangerous around the crease.

Veteri’s nose for the net will be heading down south.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound righty became the fifth Class of 2017 commit for the Huskers this week when he verballed to Division II power Tampa, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

“Steven is a strong physical player who finishes well inside,” Yorktown coach Sean Carney said. “I’m very happy for him as Tampa is a program on the verge of breaking into the (Division II) national title game.”

Veteri is the son of former Yorktown varsity boys basketball coach Steve Veteri, a phys-ed teacher in the Yorktown Central School District.

Recruiting abstractNow, here’s a Q&A with Steven on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors are that I really liked the coaching staff and the high level of lacrosse and also the campus is beautiful and being in Tampa Florida didn’t hurt either

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited a few other schools but nothing compared to Tampa

Have you decided what academic major you plan to pursue?
I plan on studying Physical Education.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My ability to play in the crease and put the ball in the back of the net and that I am a unselfish player. I like to play hard and aggressive and make my team better

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I’m am looking to improve my foot speed and lacrosse IQ.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
Being from Yorktown had a big part of starting lacrosse at a very young age and I also play varsity football for three years.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Yorktown Ballers and the showcases we went to were the NHSLS, National 175 invite and  NLI in Long Island.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my parents for always being there for me during good and bad times and and all my high school coaches since eighth grade and most of all the Yorktown alumni who has worked with me since I was a kid.
