Jesse James West made a name for himself long before he even started playing lacrosse.

The Class of 2018 attackman at Sparta High School (NJ) is named after the infamous outlaw Jesse James.

“It’s my real name,” he said.

But as a lacrosse player, West is known more for his game than his name.

West became the first freshman in Sparta program history to give a verbal late last week when he committed to Lehigh, a decision first reported by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 5-foot-9, 160-pound West is a skilled and creative super scorer who is equally strong wit both hands.

“I write lefty, and do other things righty, too,” West said. “In lacrosse I do not favor a specific hand.”

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Jesse on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
The great education, great coaching staff, and most of all, it just felt right.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Delaware, Loyola University (MD) and Rutgers. I had visits with all of those schools, too.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My vision is one of my biggest strengths, along with my ability to play lefty and righty. I’ve heard my style of play is fast and crafty.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Continue to get stronger and quicken my change of direction.

Jesse James West TwitterHow did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My fifth-grade football coach, Mr. Eberding, introduced me to lacrosse and I played football up to eighth rade. I played a ton of sports when I was younger.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I currently play for NJ Riot 2018. Prep School Showcase, UA NJ underclass tryouts, & Black Card this year.

Any final thoughts and people you want to thank for helping you reach this point?
I would like to thank my varsity coach, Tyler Meth who helped me through the recruiting process and for getting me to be the player I am now.

Because of his great coaching and mentoring through this past spring, I truly grew as a player and I’m excited to keep playing for him over the next few years.

Also, I would like to thank Lee Southren for helping me with the recruiting process and always being available to help me.
