HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. –Yorktown held off a late charge by Jamesville-DeWitt for a 10-9 victory in the New York State Class B championship game at Hofstra University on Saturday.

MVPIt was Yorktown’s seventh state title in school history and first since 2003.

Offensive MVP Luke Palmadesso (pictured at left) won 19-of-23 faceoffs. Another two-time All-American, Austin Fusco, was named defensive MVP. Fusco made  the play of the game with a takeaway check with Yorktown a man down and then going end to end to score with his long pole to give Yorktown a 10-8 lead with 5:20 left in the game.

The game was tied at 4-4 and 5-5, but Yorktown never trailed. The Huskers jumped out to a 4-0 first-quarter lead before Jamesville-DeWitt, making its fourth final-game appearance in five years, rallied to tie it at 4-4 in the second quarter. The game was tied 5-5 at halftime. Yorktown led 8-7 after three quarters.

Nicky Bonitatibus had two goals and two assists for Yorktown (18-5). Connor Vercruysse had two goals and one assist and Nick DelBene also scored two goals.

Jamesville-DeWitt (19-3) was led by Bucknell-bound junior Grayson Burns’ four goals.

Yorktown’s last state title was a 10-6 win over Jamesville-DeWitt in 2003, Dave Marr’s first season as Husker head coach.
