A marquee CT vs. NY matchup at a neutral site — and state — highlights a stacked Saturday of varsity action.
Two-time FCIAC (CT) champion New Canaan (1-0) plays St. Anthony’s, winner of four CHSAA (NY) AAA titles the last five years, at Princeton University in New Jersey, the alma mater of second-year New Canaan coach Chip Buzzeo. Game-time is 9:30 a.m. St. A’s (3-2) has won three straight since opening the season with losses to Loyola-Blakefield (Md.) and Immaculata (NJ).
Also of note, two of the tristate’s premier programs, Manhasset and unbeaten Chaminade (4-0), renew their “Reg’s Rock” rivalry game in a 7:30 p.m. game at ‘Set (3-2).
New York state two-time champion Garden City meets 2013 state finalist Bronxville in a high noon showdown at the sixth annual Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational hosted by the Haverford and Agnes Irwin schools in Pennsylvania.
Other matchups at the event are Chatham (NJ) vs. Salesianum (DE) and Salisbury School (CT) vs. Penn Charter (PA) — both at 10 a.m., Haverford School (PA) vs. La Costa Canyon (CA) and St Augustine Prep (NJ) vs. Brunswick School (CT) at 2 p.m.
In another clash of titans, Niskayuna (NY) plays at Darien (CT) at 3 p.m.
One game few may have marked on the calendar prior to the season is now one of the biggest on Long Island so far in 2014 as a pair of neighboring 5-1 teams meet: Locust Valley and defending Nassau Class C champion Friends. Game-time is 7 p.m. at Centre Island Turf Field.
