Before we get to today’s action, let’s quickly recap Wednesday’s results.
In the first big upset of the brand, spanking new season, Locust Valley (N.Y.), coming off a 6-11 record in 2013, beat 2013 Nassau County finalist Port Washington 10-9.
St. John’s-bound sophomore Mike Madsen finished with five goals and an assist. Madsen’s twin brother, Joe Madsen, also scored for the Falcons.
Smithtown West, meanwhile, survived a scare by beating Cold Spring Harbor 8-5. Maryland-bound Christian Zawadzki had three goals for West. Penn State-bound teammate Ryan Keenan had two goals and two assists.
Today is a relatively light one as teams prepare for weekend action both regular-season wise for Long Island and CHSAA teams and preseason wise for the rest of the NY/NJ/CT tristate region.
As we’ve talked about, rising Long Island power Smithtown East starts 2014 with great expectations. The Bulls are coming off a strong showing at the Smithtown West Preseason Jamboree, and could provide a good read on just how good they can here against a traditionally strong Rocky Point program coming off an uncharacteristic 6-10 season. Game-time is 4:30 p.m. at RP.
Syosset, which started the season with a 6-3 loss to two-time New York Class state champ Garden City, looks to bounce back when it hosts South Side at 5 p.m.
Also of note, Sachem East and Bayport-Blue Point starts their seasons at 4:30 p.m. East and defending Nassau Class A champ Massapequa plays at Kellenberg Memorial.
There’s also a big clash between a power from the nation’s No. 1 hotspot for the sport, Avon Old Farms (Conn.), and Landon (Md.), a team from less than an hour outside Baltimore, the nation’s proud, tradition-rich longtime homebase for the sport.
