Having launched its varsity lacrosse program in 1996, Somers High School is a relative newcomer on the Hudson Valley lacrosse landscape when compared to such established programs as Yorktown, John Jay and Mahopac.
But it didn’t take the Tuskers long to emerge as one of the elite teams in Section 1, as they won four straight Class C sectional titles from 2000 to ’03 and beat Manhasset in the 2003 state semifinals.
Now, in Class B, Somers last won a sectional title in 2009, when it was led by a senior midfielder, JoJo Marasco, who went on to star at Syracuse.
Somers will be facing some tough competition in 2014 right from the start, with its sixth annual Red/Gray Preseason Shootout set for Saturday, March 22.
The schedule, which was released tonight, includes New York state semifinalist Nisakyuna, New Jersey power Don Bosco Prep, Long Island’s Jericho as well as several of the top teams in Section 1.
