From press release

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland freshman Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) scored the go-ahead goal with two minutes, 21 seconds remaining in regulation and junior goalie Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) stuffed Union senior Greg Mooney’s (Pearl River/Nanuet) game-tying bid in the closing seconds as the nationally second-ranked Red Dragons pulled out a 7-6 win versus the Dutchmen Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.

Senior Nate Garbarino (Binghamton) and junior Benjamin Dunlavey (Elmira/Corning East) led Cortland (2-0) with two goals each. Beresovoy added an assist, senior Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) and junior Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) netted one goal apiece and senior Mike Cummings (Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and sophomore Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) recorded one assist.

Tota finished the game with eight saves. Sophomore Conner Johnston (Homer) won 10-of-16 faceoffs and collected four ground balls for the Red Dragons. Garbarino led Cortland with six ground balls, while seniors Mike Warner (Geneva) and Fred Mase (Levittown/Division Avenue) each recorded four. Senior Stephen Burke (Yorktown) registered a game-high four caused turnovers.

Junior Richard Gregory (Darien, CT) paced Union (0-1) with three goals, all in the second half. Mooney added two goals, sophomore Nolan Stauffer (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) contributed one goal and one assist, senior Rob Santangelo (Rye) recorded two assists and freshman Jack O’Connor (Wayzata, MN/Breck School) had one assist.

Union junior goalie Stefan Basile (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) turned aside 18 shots. Seniors Pat DeBenedetto (Reading, MA) and Kyle McQuiggan (Skaneateles) each collected three ground balls with McQuiggan also causing two turnovers.

Union took a 1-0 lead at the end of a sloppy first quarter on Mooney’s goal at the 5:59 mark. The Red Dragons tallied the only three goals of the second quarter for a 3-1 lead at intermission. Garbarino tied the game at 13:05. Slavik followed with his first goal of the season at 7:52 shortly after a Union penalty released, and Rakoczy netted an unassisted score 52 seconds before the half.

Dunlavey sandwiched his two goals, the second on a man-up, around Gregory’s first of the game and Cortland led 5-2 with 3:36 left in the third quarter. Gregory and Stauffer then scored goals 1:15 apart to pull the Dutchmen to within 5-4 before Garbarino closed the quarter with his team-high fourth goal of the season at the 21-second mark.

Gregory’s third goal at 11:46 off the fourth quarter made it a 6-5 game, and just over three minutes later, Mooney tied the game on an unassisted goal with more than half the quarter remaining. Beresovoy netted the game-winner, his first career goal, with 2:21 remaining when he freed himself with a spin move and buried a shot over Basile. Johnston won the ensuing faceoff, and Rakoczy hit the crossbar with a shot from point-blank range. The Dutchmen successfully cleared the ball and missed one shot wide right before Mooney worked from the left side of the goal in close where he was denied by Tota with 22 seconds remaining. Cortland turned the ball over on the clear, but Union ran out off time in an effort to score the equalizer.
