If you checked out LaxLessons.com’s Tristate Top 25 preseason team rankings, you couldn’t help but notice Smithtown West.

The Bulls, after all, are close to the top spot not only in New York, but the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region.

While Smithtown West has six college-bound seniors, it did not pick up its first 2015 commit until late last week.

Midfielder Garrett Brunsvold informed Joe Lombardi that he’s verbally committed to the University of Tampa, a decision first reported on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider premium coverage section.

The 5-foot-11, 195-pound righty is an athletic, aggressive and physical aggressive two-way midfielder who can dodge to feed and score.  You can watch his highlight reel here.

An outstanding athlete, he plays running back and linebacker in football and is a sprinter in track.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Garrett on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
I feel that Tampa has established a winning program and  they had experienced coaches. (Head) Coach (Rory) Whipple is the all-time leader in Division II wins.  The size and the business program were also a great fit for me.  The campus and facilities were also top notch.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I strongly considered Detroit, UMass- Lowell, Monmouth and St. Leo.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am an aggressive two way midfielder who can dodge to feed and score.  I am physical and athletic.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse?
I started playing lacrosse in second grade for the Smithtown Youth Program.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Smithtown West Varsity where we went to Lehigh Laxfest (champions), Tristate, Long Island Laxfest,  Hotbeds, Blue and Gold at Hofstra and the Fall Classic.  I attended 205, Super Sophs  and was on the all-star team at Peak 200.

Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my parents for supporting me and my brothers for taping my games. I would also like to thank (Smithtown West Head) Coach (Bob) Moltisanti (Jr.), along with the rest of the Smithtown West coaching staff for improving my game, making me a better player and helping me through the process.
