NORWALK, Conn. — A year ago, the St. Joseph’s season ended in heartbreak with a 9-8 loss to Weston in the Connecticut Class S state final.
This year, it was a different story for the Cadets, who held on for a 14-11 win against Brookfield in this year’s state title game, played Saturday at Brien McMahon High School.
Quinnipiac University-bound senior attackman Ryan Corcoran had seven goals and junior attackman Josiah Wilson had two goals and seven assists as the Cadets withstood a strong effort from Brookfield.
“Brookfield had a great season,” Corcoran said. “They didn’t surprise me. I think because they’re not in the FCIAC, they may not have been used to more dodging and shooter and not feeding and shooting.”
Junior midfielder Flippo Petrini won 17 of 24 faceoffs and had 14 groundballs to lead St. Joe’s to a win within a win in the possession game.
Andrew Collins had five goals and two assists and Dane Heckmann three goals and an assist for Brookfield (16-7).
“Last year, when we lost in this game, it stuck with us,” Corcoran said. “This was our last game for us seniors in a St. Joseph jersey. We wanted to make it a game we’re remembered by and a game we won’t ever forget.”
