In a wild, down-to-the-wire thriller, Nassau champion Massapequa, making its second straight Long Island Championship appearance, pulled out a 13-12 win over  first-time LIC finalist Smithtown East at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. A shot by Smithtown East’s Joe Saggese in the closing seconds went wide. Massapequa rallied to tie it at 8-9 at the half and took a 13-11 lead on junior midfielder Griffin Barnathon’s second goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining. The East-side Bulls (16-4) pulled within a goal when junior middie John Daniggelis scored off a turnover. Ian Kirby had three goals and one assist for Smithtown East. Jack Korber and Ryan Tierney joined Barnathon as two-goal scorers. Goalie Matt Valdini made 10 saves. Dan Rooney had two goals and one assist. Danigellis and Saggese each had one goal and two assists. Brian Willetts had five goals for Smithtown East. ‘Pequa (17-2) plays Section 2 (Albany area) champion Niskayuna in the Class A state semifinals on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Hofstra.

Nassau campion Lynbrook pulled out a 10-9 victory over Suffolk representative Rocky Point as Stony Brook University-bound junior midfielder Owen Daly won 19-of-21 faceoffs, including going 7-7 in the third quarter. The Owls outscored the Eagles 7-3 in the second and third quarters. Austin Fabel had four goals and had an assist, Mike McVeigh had four assists, Gordon Purdie had two goals and two assists and Brendan McDougal made 13 saves for the Owls, (19-1) who play Yorktown at Hofstra on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the state semifinals. Alex Borja led Rocky Point (18-2) with three goals.

Suffolk County’s Babylon prevented a Nassau County LIC sweep by building a big first-half lead in an 11-7 upset win over Section 8’s Locust Valley. The Panthers (12-7), who lost six of eight games during the middle of the regular season, extended a 5-0 first-quarter lead to 7-0 early in the second quarter. Nick Santorelli and Luke Zappia each had four goals and one assist for Babylon, which plays Section 1 champion Bronxville at 8 p.m. Wednesday  in the state semis at Hofstra. Joe Madsen led Locust Valley with two goals and two assists.
