We’re just over a week away from the renewal of the tristate’s premier rivalry game, the Woodstick Classic.
This year’s Woodstick, between Manhasset and Garden City, is Saturday, May 3 at GC.
Last spring, Manhasset won the teams’ Woodstick regular-season meeting, 9-7, at Manhasset. But in Woodstick 2, GC handled ‘Set 10-4 to win its third straight Section 8 Class B title.
We checked in with Garden City players and coach Steve Finnell earlier this week. You can watch the video interviews here.
Now, let’s visit with Manhasset.
The Indians have advanced to the Nassau County finals 13 times in the last 14 seasons. Manhasset’s run of 12 straight title-game appearances ended with an 11-17 loss to Wantagh in the 2012 Nassau semis. The last time ‘Set failed to make the final prior to that was 1999, when it fell to GC 10-9 in the Section 8 semis. GC then fell to Lynbrook in the title game.
This season, the Indians have had their share of ups and downs, but enter their game Saturday against Lynbrook (10-1) having won back-to-back games.
Joe Lombardi caught up with head coach Bill Cherry and UPenn-bound senior midfielder James Farrell after Manhasset’s 7-4 loss to Darien at the Battle of the Sound last weekend.
