The Class of 2014 continues to grow for St. Anthony’s (N.Y.) when it comes to commitments.
The count is now 11 with the latest verbal coming from midfielder Luke Castellano, who decided on SUNY Cortland, a decision first announced when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s Lacrosse Insider special coverage section.
Though small at 5-foot-5, 140 pounds, the righty is a quick and scrappy player who likes to dodge for the alleys from up top, often drawing and dishing.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Luke on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
When I was looking at colleges, I wanted to find a place that had both a good reputation for academics and a very strong lacrosse program. Cortland offered both that and more. The location is not too far from home. My parents will be able to come watch me play.
Having an opportunity to play on such an elite team that will compete and be a contender for a national championship all four years of my career was something I couldn’t turn down. (Head) Coach (Steve) Beville and the rest of the Cortland coaching staff made me feel comfortable and are definitely a great group of coaches i look forward to playing for.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was considering Stony Brook, Stevens Tech, Washington & Lee, Bard and Trinity. I visited Stevens, Bard and Trinity. I also had a visit planned with Stony Brook later this month.
What area of your game do you need to work on?
I would like to work on my off-hand, on-the-run shot. I would also like to work on my strength as a whole.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse at a very young age. My parents bought me and my twin brother Nick lacrosse sticks. When I was in third grade, my parents signed me up for the local town team in Wantagh. I fell in love with lacrosse and have been playing ever since.
I have also played football, basketball, soccer and baseball. Once I got into high school, I decided to only play lacrosse.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
This summer, I played for the LI Express Orange team. We participated in NYLA, Hero tournament (Pa.), and Hofstra Warrior Classic. Individually, I participated in National 175 Showcase (fall).
Any final thoughts?
I would first like to thank my parents for always being there for me with everything and throughout my whole sports career, driving me to all the tournaments, practices and games all over the East Coast.
In addition, I would like to thank my entire family for supporting me through this recruiting process.
I also want to thank all my coaches at St. Anthony’s for helping me improve my game and become the best player I can be. Coach Mike Chanenchuck at St. Anthony’s and with Express was a big help for me throughout this process.
I would lastly like to thank the Lord for providing all these opportunities for me throughout life and giving me all my strengths.
Congrats LC!
Your a great kid with a great future. You deserve it, best of luck!
