Few may recognize the name Jay Silverheels.

Silverheels was an actor who appeared in the popular television series “The Lone Ranger,” playing the role of Tonto.

NandNThat series aired in the 1940s and ’50s, but “The Lone Ranger” is back in a new movie starring Johnny Depp.

The New York Times reports that Silverheels, whose actual name was Harry Smith, would never have been cast in the role of Tonto had it not been for his involvement in lacrosse.
