Suffolk County’s Division 1 rookie of the year has found a Division I college home.

The University of Maryland.

That will also be the collegiate destination of Riverhead High School (N.Y.) longstick defensive midfielder Blake Carrara.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Carrara, who was an all-star at the Maverik Showtime National Recruiting Spotlight, also performed well at the Long Island Showcase.

He is a quick, on-ball, takeaway defender with the ability to come away with groundballs and clear and push the ball in transition who possesses outstanding stick skills.

The Terrapins now have two verbals from tristate standouts.

We told you back on July 31 that St. Augustine Prep (N.J.) midfielder Jared Chiachetti committed to Maryland.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Blake on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Maryland is a great school academically and also has a very strong lacrosse program. I really like (Maryland Head) Coach (John) Tillman and the other coaches who showed me around campus during my visit.

I felt like there was no better fit for me than Maryland.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited Virginia, Loyola and Princeton. I also considered Yale.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to work on my off-ball defense, communication and left hand.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse when I was in third grade, and I’ve just been in love with the sport ever since I started playing. I also play football and run track in the winter.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for the Long Island Rebels, I went to Maverik Showtime where I was an all-star and I also played in the Long Island Showcase.

Any final thoughts?
I’d like to thank my parents for letting me play so much lacrosse and for driving me up and down the East Coast to play.

I’d also like to thank my varsity coach Vic Guadagnino and my travel team coach Tom Gilmartin for helping me develop as a player and for helping me with the recruiting process.

Hey A big congrats to Blake! He is a excellent player and I am sure he will become a great college player. I would like to express that I believe Tom Gilmartin, Blake’s coach and director of the Long Island Rebels deserves a lot of credit for helping Blake get on everyone’s radar so quickly. Coach used his connections to get him invited to Maverik Showtime and personally contacted every D1 school on Blake’s behalf as he does for all of his players. Blake’s talent definatley earned him his scholarship, but some credit should be given to Coach Gilmartin for his efforts.
