Sean O’Brien showed plenty of flashes of his vast potential this past season at Sachem North High School (N.Y.).

As a sophomore starter on a young Flaming Arrows squad, it didn’t take long for the 6-foot-2, 165-pound attackman to distinguish himself as one of the team’s best players.

“He’s a great kid with a ton of potential,” Sachem North coach Jason Mauro said of O’Brien. “He’s also very skilled at getting his hands free, a tough kid and a great athlete who’s growing into his body and will be force for us next year.”

And beyond.

Earlier today, O’Brien decided where that will be at the college level, verballing to Army, a commitment that was first reported when it was made by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s “Lacrosse Insider” section.

O’Brien, who also plays basketball and football, has a strong shot and a high lacrosse IQ. He’s also strong with either hand and is a rare example of a lacrosse player who can be classified as being ambidextrous.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Sean on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
I thought that West Point would be the best fit for me. It is a challenge that not many people in life get to experience. It’s an opportunity for me to get a stellar education, play lacrosse and serve my country.  It fits my personality and is something that I always strived for since I was young.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
The only other school that I  considered seriously was Navy.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I think that I have a high lacrosse IQ with really good stick skills.  My size really helps me out as well.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I think I need to increase my foot speed.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My father played for Sachem and he got me my first stick at 3. I played for South Shore and  Sachem Youth since kindergarten.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
My travel team is Sachem North. Coach Mauro likes us to stay  together.  I have participated in the Island Uprising, Long Island Lacrosse Showcase and many summer tournaments with Sachem North.

Any final thoughts?
I would like to thank my youth coaches, and high school coaches for helping me improve as a player and a person through out the years .  I would like to thank Coach Mauro for helping throughout the recruiting process. I have to thank my parents and family for who I am today.
