bonomi

Ryan Bonomi is no stranger to joining new lacrosse programs.

The rising senior at St. Anthony’s played on the varsity team at Northport before transferring prior to his junior season with the Friars.

In another year, the athletic, two-way midfielder will be preparing to make another transition to a new team.

Bonomi has given a verbal commitment to play on the new Division I program at the University of Richmond, as first reported yesterday at Twitter.com/Joe_Lombardi.

Equipped with good size as well as speed, Bonomi is an effective dodger and also works hard on defense and in coming away with groundballs.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Ryan on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
I chose to spend four years of my life at Richmond because the coaches made me feel comfortable and at home. The university provides me with a beautiful campus, excellent athletic facilities, top education quality, a warm climate, and a brand new Division I lacrosse program where I will be able to make an impact immediately. These were all reasons for my decision.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I also considered Dartmouth, Lafayette and Colgate. I visited Dartmouth and Lafayette.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are based on my athleticism, size and speed. I do a lot of downhill dodging from the midfield line in order to shoot on the run and I aggressively try to get in close to the goal very often. I also use my physical strengths to play solid one-on-one defense and fight for ground balls.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
I need to continue to improve the fluidity and smoothness of my stick skills, mainly in my weak hand.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I was introduced to lacrosse at a very young age, playing for Northport’s PAL teams coached by Al Cicio and Bill Golden. I quickly grew to love the game. I currently also play football and I used to play basketball and baseball.

What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Pat Brennan and the Long Island Outlaws and I have participated in Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip, the Brine Shootout, the Philly Showcase, Tri-State, and many more.

Any final thoughts?
I am very blessed to be in this position, and I would like to thank God, my parents for teaching me almost everything I know, my sisters and brother, (St. Anthony’s Head) Coach (Keith) Wieczorek, (St. Anthony’s Assistant) Coach (Doug) Schreiber, and all of the St. Anthony’s coaches, Pat Brennan, and all of the people who have taught and supported me throughout my life.
