Cara Quimby

The Syracuse University women’s lacrosse team is ranked fifth in the latest IWLCA Division I coaches’ poll.

And the Orange are also making their mark when it comes to recruiting.

Earlier this month, we told you Syracuse landed a commitment from sophomore midfielder Mary Rahal of Queensbury High School (N.Y.).

Today, we have news of another major sophomore commit for SU.

It comes from Cara Quimby, who plays at another upstate New York high school: Guilderland.

Quimby is a versatile lefty attack player who excels in transition, as shown in her highlight reel.

recruiting_updateNow, here’s a Q&A with Cara on her commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Playing lacrosse at Syracuse University and for Coach (Gary) Gait will be a dream come true for me.

I decided on Syracuse over other top programs for several reasons. Syracuse offers excellent academics and a great lacrosse program. with the best coaching staff and facilities in the country.

It was a tough decision. I also really liked Northwestern University when I visited there, but in my heart, I knew I wanted to play for the Orange, plus it’s only two hours from home which will be great for my family.

I am interested in the health care field (my grandfather was a medical doctor and I really admired him) and a factor in my decision was that Syracuse University offers many academic majors that are applicable to health care. SU also has associations with several hospitals in Syracuse.

I have a 96 average with many honors courses. Academics are what’s important.  I believe Syracuse offers me the opportunity to excel both academically and athletically in lacrosse.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Northwestern, UMass, Notre Dame, Virginia and Albany.  I visited Northwestern, UMass, Cornell, Fairfield and Albany.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Left-handed attack player with excellent stick skills with good speed and agility. Style of play is high tempo with ability to score in transition or in set plays.  I am comfortable playing on top or from behind the net.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Strength and conditioning to continue to build more upper body strength, this will make my shot even faster and harder in the future.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I started playing lacrosse in fourth grade.  I grew up watching the older girls in my neighborhood play lacrosse, such as Danielle Tetreault (currently at Harvard) and Bridget Daley (currently at Syracuse), and I fell in love with the sport.  I also played very competitive soccer for a Premiere travel team, high school soccer and field hockey.

What travel team did you play on last summer and what showcase events did you participate in?
My travel club team is Albany Elite Lacrosse Club.  Showcase events:  National Tournament School Girls Division – Stony Brook, N.Y.;  Star Spangled Banner – Baldwinsville, N.Y.;  Prime Time – Bel Air, Md.; Long Island Elite Showcase – N.Y.
