We’re just a day away from “Showdown Saturday,” and some huge early season tristate contests, including Chaminade-West Islip, La Salle-Garden City and Yorktown-John Jay.

Yorktown-John Jay will be unique in that, even though this is Week 1 of the regular season in New York’s Section 1, both teams already have played a mutual opponent.

Columbine, the Colorado-based school which is in the midst of a three-game swing through the heart of the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region.

You see, Columbine played — and lost — to Yorktown 8-5 on Wednesday.

And yesterday, the Rebels played — and lost — to John Jay 13-12.

So if scores against mutual opponents are an indication, Saturday’s Yorktown-John Jay game should go down to the wire.

Of course, mutual scores may not be needed to predict a close game between the Huskers and Indians. After all, Yorktown picked up a two-goal win against John Jay in Week 1 last season before beating the Indians in overtime in the Section 1 Class B final.

Speaking of close ones, our latest poll question, which asks who you think will win Saturday’s Yorktown-John Jay game, is a neck-and-neck race. Be sure to vote now. Your vote could be the difference maker.
