Today marked the first day of official varsity practices and tryouts for most teams throughout New York State beyond Long Island, which started last Monday.

Among the sections getting things started today was Section 1 (Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties), home of two-time Class C champion Bronxville.

When Bronxville won the section in 2011, it marked a first in school history.

Jack Grass, then a sophomore, was a key contributor on that team.

Now a senior, Grass, an attackman headed for Hopkins, now hopes to help the Broncos accomplish another first in his final varsity season. A first-ever appearance in the state finals.

Now, here are Jack’s perspectives on the upcoming season.11-300x150

What have you been doing to get ready for the season?
As a team, we have been playing lacrosse as much as possible.

Throughout the winter the team has been meeting a couple nights during the week to work out and play lacrosse.

And on the weekends, we’ve been playing in a winter league out of Trumbull, Conn.

How does your schedule look, what games are you looking forward to most, and who are some of your scrimmages against?
Our schedule looks very good this year. I believe it is the best schedule that Bronxville has ever had.

I am definitely looking forward to the Yorktown and John Jay games.

To prepare us for the season we are scrimmaging Greenwich, Smithtown West, Iona Prep and Fordham Prep.

What player or players on your team do you think will surprise some people this season?
While many young guys will surprise this year, Matt Behrens is one player in particular who will have a very big year. He just recently committed to Georgetown and is a big, strong lefty attackman.

Reilly Walsh, a freshman who played on the team as an eighth-grader will also have a big year. A couple other players whom  I think will contribute a lot are Charlie Tarry, Ted Forst, Michael Crawford and Cyrus Adamiyatt.

What do you think the strength of your team will be this year?
I think that we will be a very well-rounded team.  We are returning a lot of starters from last year on both ends of the ball.

I may be a little biased, but I think that the strength of the team will be the offense.  We have a lot of guys who are able to score on that end of the field.

How do you view the race in your league and who do you think some of the contending teams will be?
I think that it will be a tough race this year.

The leagues were restructured in our conference this year, allowing us to schedule more competitive out of conference games, but Pelham and Mamaroneck have good teams, White Plains always gives us good games, and Scarsdale has improved, so anything can happen.

This could be Bronxville’s best squad ever. Should be interesting year.

True and very importantly combining that with playing a very competitive schedule will put them in their best position in years to have a real shot at winning NYS Class C.

    Well said slacrosse.
