berge

Craig Berge’s abilities on the field made him a target recruit of many of the nation’s top programs.

The midfielder at Massapequa High School (N.Y.), one of the top juniors in the nation, became even more appealing to elite college programs because of his proficiency in the classroom. He sports a 3.73 grade-point average.

So Berge had a lot to consider — and a lot of options.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound right-hander weighed a lot of factors before giving a verbal commitment to Georgetown University, a decision first reported at Twitter.com/joe_lombardi.

Berge, who has the combination of size and speed, excels in transition, as shown in his highlight reel.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Craig on his commitment.recruiting_update

What were the main factors in your decision?
There were many different factors that came into play. The No. 1 thing for me was my education. I wanted to go to a school that could open up many doors for me after graduation. The education that Georgetown provides is second to none.

One of the things I would always ask myself, was if I could not play lacrosse, would I be happy spending four years of my life at this school.

Georgetown has a great tradition, and I am extremely excited to be a part of it.

The campus of Georgetown is simply amazing, which really helped me make my decision.

(Georgetown Head) Coach Kevin Warne is a great coach, as well as a great person, which made my decision that much easier. I’m extremely excited about becoming a Hoya.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered many different schools and took a lot of visits. I considered most of the Ivy League universities, as I took visits to Harvard, Princeton and Cornell. I also had the chance to visit Hofstra and Fairfield.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My quickness, vision and change of direction. I would describe my style of play as uptempo. I believe I am at my best when I push the ball in transition. I like breaking down the defense and making that “one more” pass.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?

I was introduced to lacrosse in fourth grade by Jim Byrns, the father of my best friend and current teammate James Byrns. I actually quit lacrosse to play baseball up until seventh grade. I play basketball as well as football for the Chiefs.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
Jim Byrns has been my coach as a little kid, and taught me almost everything about the game that I currently know. All of my coaches at Massapequa – Coach Tim Radomski, Coach Kieran O’Brien, Coach Kevin Sheehan and Coach Michael Draper – have helped develop my game even further since I’ve reached the varsity level. They’ve taught me vital skills and knowledge that have helped my level of play evolve.

My parents have also been my biggest fan since the day I stepped on the field, which has helped me greatly.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in last summer?
I played on the Long Island Jesters over the summer. I attended Jake Reed’s Nike Blue Chip and Maverik Showtime as well as many others. However my favorite event was the Long Island Showcase. It was awesome to play against all the top players from Long Island, many of them being my close friends and former teammates during the summer.

Pequa has a nice squad this year. Berge/Byrns a nice tandem.

Nice recruit for Gtown. They don’t usually get too many studs from LI.
