We started off this week with news of our third rising sophomore commitment by a tristate sophomore.

It was made by Lazare Zoungrana of the Brunswick School in Greenwich, Conn.

The 5-foot-9, 155-pound longstick midfielder/defenseman verballed to the University of Virginia.

Zoungrana, a New Rochelle resident, has exceptional speed and athleticism and excels in transition situations.

Amazingly, as you’ll read, he just picked up the sport just over three years ago.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Lazare on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
The combination of academics and lacrosse that Virginia has to offer is extraordinary. I feel like it is a  place where I can really accomplish my goals such as studying at a very good Business school and winning a national championship. Other main factors are the level of comfort that I feel in Charlottesville and I really like the coaching staff.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I was also considering North Carolina and Princeton and I visited North Carolina.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths as a player are my speed and athleticism. It allows me to press out on the offense and quickly recover if my man gains a step on me. It also allows me to push transition which is what I   really like to do.

What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I am continually working on all areas of my game but I am especially focused on improving my stick skills and my overall lacrosse iq.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
I would say the people that have had the biggest influence on me would be my friends. They forced me to pick up a stick in the spring of seventh grade and have always been there for me to help me out.

One of my best friends, Tucker Brown, always told me about how much potential I had and his enthusiasm for the game caused me to love it even more.

All of my coaches that I have had have been key to my development. My eighth-grade youth lacrosse coach, Patrick Coleman, always told me that if I worked hard that the sky would be the limit for me. The Brunswick varsity coaches, Bruce and Gilsenan, have always been there for me and helped me greatly during this recruiting process and I am really appreciative of them for that.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in this summer?
I played on the Connecticut Chargers this summer and I attended Crabfeast, Tri-states, and the Big Time Shootout. I also attended the New England Prep Showcase.
