Like many players growing up in Yorktown, lacrosse has been a way of like for as long as Brian Prestreau can remember.

In fact, he grew up surrounded by it.

Prestreau, who took up the sport at age 6, lives next door to former Yorktown All-Americans Tom and Kevin Interlicchio and right down the street from another former Husker All-American, John Ranagan. Tom Interlicchio was a midfielder at Hofstra and team captain his senior season in 2010. John Ranagan and Kevin Interlicchio both play at Johns Hopkins.

Prestreau will soon become a Division I lacrosse player himself.

The rising senior midfielder gave a verbal commitment early today to play at Stony Brook as first reported on Twitter.com/joe_lombardi.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Prestreau has good size and speed and sees the field well.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Brian on his commitment:

What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision for picking where I go to college were:  a good school academically and athletically, the location and it being good fit for me and my family.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
The other school that I was seriously considering besides Stony Brook was Marquette.  I went to Marquette in January for a visit and really liked it. It is just too far away.  In addition, I had overnight visits to St. Joe’s, Scared Heart and UMBC and had been speaking with Rutgers.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I am fast, I can dodge from up top, have a strong fast shot and I always have my head up to look for the open man.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
The person who had the biggest influence on me as a player is Tom Interlicchio. He has taught me everything I know about the game.  My parents have also had influence on me by taking me to and from my practices and by being supportive and always encourage me to do my best.

How did the Interlicchios and John Ranagan influence you in your development?
John and Kevin taught me many tricks and tips to becoming the best lacrosse player I can be and living right next to the Interlicchios and having John three houses away did help when we were shooting in the backyard, it was a lot of fun and I have great memories.
