mschaeferIt was just over a month ago that we broke at our Lacrosse Insider special coverage section that Penn State received its first Class of 2016 verbal commitment (from Gerard Arceri of Smithtown East High School, N.Y.).

Since then, PSU has picked up four more from the tristate region with the latest coming earlier this week, as first reported by Joe Lombardi. PSU’s latest rising sophomore commitment has come from Canandaigua Academy (N.Y.) 2016 midfielder Mitchell Schaefer has committed to Penn State.

Schaefer was the MVP of the Section V Class B tournament as a freshman last spring. The righty finished the season with 23 goals and 13 assists.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Schaefer is a dodger/shooter who likes to play a physical style. You can watch Schaefer’s highlight reel here.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Mitch on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
Penn State has a great coaching staff and they are very family oriented. I like the fact that it is close to home so family and friends can come watch me play.

recruiting_updateWhat other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I visited UVa, Syracuse, Duke, Notre Dame, Maryland and UNC.

What area of your game do you need to work on?
Man-to-man defense.

How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
My cousin, Chris Mulheron, played for Binghamton, so I’ve been around lacrosse my whole life. My dad played as well. I presently play football and have played basketball in the past.

What travel team do you play on and what showcase events did you participate in?
I play for Sweetlax and participated in King of the Hill, Crabfeast and Hotbeds.

Any final thoughts?
I couldn’t be happier to play for (Penn State Head) Coach (Jeff) Tambroni and the Nittany Lions. I would like to thank the Canandaigua coaching staff, (Head) coach (Ed) Mulheron, my teammates, my parents, my sister Lauren and my family and friends.
