It’s not exactly surprising, but it is impressive.

NandNA record total 722,205 played lacrosse last year, according to the annual participation report by US Lacrosse.

That marked an increased of 5.5 percent from 2011 — the ninth straight year of five percent growth.

In addition, there’s been an increase of 184 percent in player participation since 2001.

Also of note, 1,388 high schools added boys and/or girls programs from 2007-12, making it the fastest growing high school sport. Lax is also the fastest growing collegiate sport (with 30 new programs added last year).
