With Chaminade’s loss to Yorktown, the top varsity squad right now in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lacrosse, the New York/New Jersey/Connecticut tristate region, may well be Ward Melville.

Just five games separate the Patriots from finishing the regular season unbeaten.

LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16The most challenging game during that stretch should come today as Ward Melville plays at defending New York State Class A champion West Islip.

WM (11-0) has lost six straight to the Lions (8-3), including two three-goal setback last year, with the second meeting coming in the Suffolk County Class A final. The Patriots’ last win vs. WI was an 8-7 overtime win on May 5, 2009.

You can watch the renewal of the rivalry live at 4:30 p.m. today on MSGVarsity.com.

Also of note in Long Island action today, Huntington (9-3) visits Sayville (7-4) at 4:30 p.m.

Among Section 1 games today, Arlington (7-3) hosts New Rochelle (5-3) at 5:30 p.m. and defending Section 1 Class A champion Mamaroneck (7-3) plays at Pelham (4-3) at 4:30 p.m.

In a NY/CT crossover contest, Nyack (5-3) visits Weston (5-4) at 5:30 p.m.

Defending FCIAC champion New Canaan (8-1) hosts Trinity Catholic (0-8) in a 7 p.m. game at Dunning Stadium.

It’s a busy day in New Jersey. Among the matchups: Rutgers Prep (10-1) at Immaculata (8-4) and Westfield (6-3) at Seton Hall Prep (2-7).

  1. LI Lax says:

Don’t think WI has enough offense to stay with WM…may be close for a while though. 10-3 final would be my guess.

  2. LaxLessons.com says:

Ward Melville leads West Islip 1-0 after one.

  3. LaxLessons.com says:

Ward Melville beats West Islip for the first time since 2009, winning 11-2 to improve to 12-0.
