With the official start of spring now less than 24 hours away (it arrives officially at 7:02 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 20), the tristate region received one (hopefully) last blast of wintry weather that began at nightfall on Monday.

But with snow expected to change to rain in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, the prospects are promising that today’s scheduled games and scrimmages will be played. But stay tuned here for any weather-related updates.

LL_Game-Day-CROPPED16Today’s slate is headlined by the traditional lid-lifter between Garden City and Syosset. This will be the fifth straight year the LI powers have opened the season against one another. Game-time is 4:45 p.m. at Garden City (which is a late change of venue). Defending New York Class B state champion GC has won three straight against the 2012 Nassau County Class A champion Braves, who last defeated the Trojans, 6-3, in 2009.

Another national power, Avon Old Farms, started its season with a 7 p.m. game against Kent Denver (Colo.) in Florida.

In other games today on Long Island, Commack visits Mount Sinai at 4 p.m., Oyster Bay hosts Hicksvilleand  Plainedge visits Plainview JFK at 4:15 p.m., Connetquot plays at Eastport/South Manor at 4:30 p.m., Locust Valley visits Port Washington, Baldwin is at Long Beach, Harborfields visits Walt Whitman and Massapequa hosts Carey at 4:45 p.m. and Jericho plays Floral Park in a 6:30 p.m. game at Robbins Lane Park in Syosset.

In a Section 1 scrimmage, Harrison visits Nyack at 4:15 p.m.

  1. IslandLaxpert says:

I like GC to win today 11-6. Anyone else have a prediction?

    • LaxLessons.com says:

There has been a change in the site and starting time for GC-Syosset. The game will now be 5 p.m. today on the turf field at Garden City HS.

  2. WestLax says:

I like Syosset by 2 or 3. They have an all American goalie. Sophmore LSM verbal to “The Ohio State University” Another sophmore comitted to Hopkins they are deep.

  3. Trojan Horse says:

GC holds on to beat Syosset 8-4. Good effort by both teams.

    • LaxLessons.com says:

Justin Guterding and Lucas Clay each had three goals and one assist for GC. Brian Badgett had three assists. Hopkins-bound goalie Ryan Feit of Syosset had 16 saves.

  4. LI Guy says:

    Also all finals…

    Hicksville 8, Oyster Bay 7

    Pequa 11, Carey 0

    Mt. Sinai 10, Commack 7

  5. 495 Lax says:

Surprising that Hicksville struggled to beat OB.

  6. Islandia says:

Feit kept Syo in it. GC just doesn’t skip a beat despite losing a lot of talented kids each year to graduation. Syo is a solid team. I think they can upset Manhasset next Saturday if all goes right for them.

  7. GC dad says:

As always we didnt skip abeat. Guterding will be player of the year, hats off to Syosset- if not for their goalie it could have been 20-4!!

  8. Laxman says:

And hats off to garden city for picking up where they left off last year. Feit was amazing as was all of syo defense. Disappointed in syo midfield today- they can play better. Attack hopefully will click. Looks like the 9th and 10th graders will lead this team!

  9. Eleven 5 Three Oh says:

Nice all around game for Brian Badgett for GC vs Syo. A very unselfish and versatile player who is back in full force after football injury.

  10. Laxx says:

Feit is definately the best goalie on LI. Balkam is #2 I think.
