LaxLessons.com and Epoch Lacrosse have teamed up for a new feature at LaxLessons.com in which lacrosse standouts share their epic high school memories.

Darien High School is home of one of the nation’s top boys lacrosse programs.

Scott Bulkey, now the varsity coach at Fairfield County, Conn., rival Greenwich High School, knows that better than anyone.

After all, Bulkley helped Darien get there.

The midfielder, who graduated in 1991, was the first All-American in Blue Wave history and also named first-team all-state that season. He went on to become captain for the men’s lacrosse team at the University of North Carolina. The Tar Heels won three ACC championships and made two NCAA Final Four appearances during his four-year collegiate career.

The 40-year-old Bulkley also serves as CPCT Lacrosse Director and Boys 2016 Team head coach.

In his first season as Greenwich head coach in 2009, he led the Cardinals to the FCIAC championship with a 5-4 win over New Canaan that followed an 8-7 semifinal-round victory over Darien, where Bulkley had served as an assistant coach the previous six seasons under head coach Jeff Brameier.epic

What makes your high school varsity career so memorable and meaningful?
The journey I took with my teammates.  I had some great teammates who worked so hard to help our team take that next step to being in the conversation with New Canaan and Wilton.

Darien had only had a varsity program for a couple of years and my senior year was a great culmination of all the hard work my teammates and I had put in.

We were the first team in the program history to beat New Canaan and the first team to make it to the state championship game.

Looking back now at how far the program has come, being a nationally recognized powerhouse, it is an awesome testament to all the great players and coaches who helped build this program.

If you had to pick one most memorable moment or game from high school what would it be and why?
Beating New Canaan for the first time in our program history.

We had always been the punching bag for New Canaan in lacrosse, so it was awesome to beat New Canaan and advance to the state championship game.

I will never forget that feeling or the look in my teammates eyes after we won.

What was the most memorable moment of your first varsity season?
The most memorable game from my sophomore year, I made varsity that year, was against Wilton in state semifinals.

I started at close defense with a short stick. The idea was to shut off Wilton’s best attackmen. What made it so memorable was how intense the game was.

It was first real experience to the level at which I needed to play if I wanted to become really good at lacrosse.

I used that game to help motivate me to get better the rest of my high school career.
