What do you get when you combine size with skills and an aggressive style of play?

A defenseman who became a target recruit for several Division I programs.

Meet Kyle Nawrocki.

The rising junior from Hauppauge High School decided last week that his college career will be spent at Binghamton University, as first reported last week at Twitter.com/joe_lombardi,

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Nawrocki is a lefty who is also known for his punishing checks.

Now, here’s a Q&A with Kyle on his commitment.

What were the main factors in your decision?
I had a lot of options in deciding on a school but I thought Binghamton was the best fit.  The academic standings were very important and probably had the biggest impact on me.  (Binghamton Head) Coach (Scott) Nelson is creating a great program with a lot of potential and a winning attitude.  I got along very well with both Coach Nelson and (Assistant) Coach (Steve) Settembrino and am looking forward to playing for them.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?recruiting_update
I was considering Yale, Hofstra, Albany, and Delaware.  I visited Yale, Hofstra, St. John’s, Albany, USMMA and, of course, Binghamton.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
My strengths are my size, speed and my ability to communicate on the field. I’ve always been a very aggressive player with a football mentality; having played varsity football as a freshman and sophomore.  Also, being a lefty has been a big advantage.

Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
My youth coaches showed tremendous support at a young age; being big and athletic since I was young, they saw potential and believed in me from the start.  My high school coaches (Jim Konen and Greg Foster) and travel coach (Pat Brennan) continued to help me develop my skills every year.

But I think the person who has had the biggest influence on me has been my defensive trainer, Adam Swarsen.  He has had a huge impact on me, helping to push me toward my potential, and always striving toward perfecting my defensive skills.  Adam is a graduate of Hofstra and was the recipient of the No. 27 Headstrong jersey.

What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in this summer?
I play with the Long Island Outlaws.  I was a member of the Brine National All-American team, Maverik Showtime all-star team, National Invitational 175, Brine Shootout, and I made the Empire State Cup team, but could not attend because of a schedule conflict.
