Drew Custance brings plenty to his position.
Make that positions.
That very point is illustrated by the fact that the 6-foot, 155-pound rising senior is equally proficient as an attackman or midfielder for national power St. Anthony’s, the three-time defending New York CHSAA champions.
Custance, an adept dodger with good footwork and an aggressive style of player, will continue to play for the Friars after he graduated from St. A’s.
That’s because he has given a verbal commitment to the Providence College Friars.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Drew on his commitment.
What were the main factors in your decision?
The main factors in my decision were that I felt comfortable with the coaches. I also loved the campus and liked the fact it was near the city of Providence. I’m excited to be a part of an up-and-coming program.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
The other schools I was considering were St John’s and Furman. I visited Jacksonville, St John’s, Furman, Rutgers and Bellarmine.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I would say my strengths as a player are my agile feet, quick dodging and defensive play in transition. My style of play is creating offense with quick split dodges and aggressive defense.
What areas of your game have you been working to improve on?
I have been working mostly on my on-the-run shot righty and lefty along with getting stronger.
Who have been some of the biggest influences on you during your development as a player?
All the coaches at St. Anthony’s have helped me improve and my biggest influence has been training with Coach (Doug) Schreiber.
What travel team did you play on and what were some of the big showcase events you participated in this summer?
I played on For the Love of the Game. The biggest showcase events that I participated in are Under Armour tryouts, UMass, FLG 3D and Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip.
