We started a week that wraps up today with Cinco de Mayo (not to mention the Kentucky Derby) by spotlighting three games this weekend.
One was completed last night. The other two are today.
A strong second half lifted Yorktown to a 14-10 win over Lakeland/Panas and its 20th Charlie Murphy Cup in the 23-year history of the event. The Huskers, who trailed 8-6 at halftime, outscored the Rebels 8-2 in the second half.
Nick Mariano had four goals and three assists, Conor Gately three goals and two assists and Connor Vercruysse three goals for Yorktown, which has won six straight.
So now, we turn to today.
We start, of course, with the granddaddy of them all in high school lacrosse.
Garden City, which beat Manhasset twice last season (in the Woodstick Classic and the Nassau County Class B title game), enters the 4:30 p.m. game as a solid favorite. The unbeaten Trojans remain the nation’s top-ranked team. You can watch the game live on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14, starting at 4 p.m., with the pregame show hosted by Keith Irizarry, and on msgvarsity.com.
The third spotlight game of the weekend is a 2 p.m. clash between three-time CHSAA champion and national power St. Anthony’s against another national power, Darien, winners of six Class M Connecticut state titles the last seven years. Game-time is 2 p.m. at DHS Stadium.
Also of note in Connecticut, Chaminade visits Fairfield Prep at 4 p.m. at Fairfield University’s Lessing Stadium and Ridgefield hosts Brien McMahon at 6 p.m. at Tiger Hollow Stadium.
In a contest between contenders in the FCIAC and Section 1, New Canaan visits John Jay at 7 p.m.
Long Island meets New Jersey as Shoreham-Wading River visits Mountain Lakes in a noon game.
Also of note in the Garden State, Shawnee plays at Bridgewater-Raritan.
In a New York vs. Massachusetts showdown, Niskayuna plays at Duxbury.
Section 1 meets Section 9 when Clarkstown South hosts Minisink Valley at 6 p.m.
Dobbs Ferry’s unbeaten start will be on the line when it plays Pelham (10-1) at 7 p.m. at Glover Field.
Rivals reunite when Horace Greeley hosts Fox Lane at 3 p.m. Ten of the last 11 meetings between the teams have been decided by three goals or less.
You can catch the premiere broadcast of the game on Tuesday, May 8 at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premiere on Channel 14, you can watch the broadcast on On-Demand Channel 614 and msgvarsity.com.
Bacause of a lack of available officials today, the Bronxville-Somers game thatnhad been scheduled for today has been moved to Monday at 5:30. Today’s morning SATs have resulted in a high number of games starting at 2 p.m. or after.
There are also some big games in the prep school ranks. Avon Old Farms visits Trinity-Pawling and Choate hosts Berkshire School.
Needless to say, there are many other games in the tristate region today. Scroll down to check the links to access the complete schedules.

Nice “statement win” for Darien and comeback game after loss to Town.
Way to go Blue Waves! Great win for Darien. It could have easily been by more than one goal but St. Anthony’s #25 won almost very face off.
Too bad no Darien/Fairfield Prep game.
Darien may be in for a “deliberate” pace of O by Ridgefield as Jay faced.

Update on JJ vs NC?
What a day for CT Lax. 1st Darien knocks off St A’s & then Prep beats Chaminade. A Quick:60’s Top 20 Just got Blasted by the Nutmeg State… LOL
New Cannan 10 John Jay 5 Final.. JJ is way overated!!
Congrats NC on the big win over John Jay. Don’t write off the Rams in the FCIAC race!
JJ offense needs a system
Did Branca play in goal for JJ??
Final: Trinity-Pawling 11, Avon Old Farms 10
Congrats to New Canaan.
Gotta say don’t understand how Jay beats or comes within 1-2 goals of some very top teams (Manhassat, Ridgefield, Massepeaqua, Town, etc) and then loses to NC by FIVE goals!. Would have thought this to be a Jay win or at least a very close game?
Not sure if you saw the Town v JJ game to start the year, but Town was a completely different team then. They played an awful game and honestly JJ looked better on that day. Now, Town is starting to show their true colors and no way is it a 1 goal game if Town plays up to their potential. From what I’ve heard, Sett has had a down year, as has Massapequa. Down years for them so they’re still good, just not the powerhouses they usually are. Didn’t see the Ridgefield game, but probably a combination of JJ having a great game and gameplan and Ridgefield having a poor game.
Didn’t see that first game. Yeah Sett and Pequa may be somewhat down but still are two real strong teams so credit to J in those games.
No doubt Town has seemed to hit a real solid high level of play which they can continue to build on moving into the playoffs with still 2 more signature games to play in Wilton and St Anthonys.
Right now, on paper I’d have to go with Town to be at least a couple goals favorite in a Class B final vs most likely Jay or Somers–BUT anything can happen in a play-off game vs good teams like these.
Town outshot jj 43 to 17 in 1st game. Could have been a 8 goal game easy. Watch it again. Town was in total control after jj scored 1st 2 goals. Rematch should be 11 5 game or there abouts.
Overconfidence will kill any team, whether they are the better team or not. Just ask Chaminade, or Darien.
Agree that it “should be” something like that.
Jay led 6-4 in that game. Town took over after that, but it was at the very end of the third .
Jay has a problem with O. They have players, but not the right package. “Sharing the ball” is not a game plan -it’s a metaphor. Their zone, which has in fairness , been extremely effective allows the other team to dictate and be patient and prevents Jay’s O from getting the transition and possessions they need to dominate. There may still be great plays that happen that are contrary to this, but the scores this season all have something in common. I don’t think anybody, or very few teams in the state, could beat them by more than 5 goals. However, anybody who’s decent and focused has a shot to beat them . Just the way the ball has been bouncing this season.
Their D has been successful, but at times the medicine is just as harmful as the illness .
laxxx, Massepequa’s only loss other than JJ was to then the #4 in the country Chaminade in OT and they were on the cusp of breaking into top 25 nationally, which is pretty good for them because they usually don’t get the national attention. Not exactly a down year when they’ve had 17 losses in the previous 3 seasons.
As I’ve been told, Chaminade played quite possibly the ugliest game they could possibly muster. I didn’t see it so it’s all hearsay, but I believe the source since it was a college coach. Did not realize they’ve been that poor lately, but traditionally they’ve been a powerhouse. That’s how I meant it. But bottom line, the point I was making was that Pequa is not that good this year, despite what their record says.
Justlaxin – You can say what you like about shots. Town couldn’t hit the cage and played very sloppy ball most of the game. Anyone can outshoot anybody, but it’s about getting good shots, not just ripping it from 20 yards out wide of the cage by 4 feet. Woulda, coulda, shoulda been an 8 goal game. Fact remains that it wasn’t. Different Town team playing now. Moving Fusco to midfield was a great move by Coach Marr. As I said, if they play up to their potential, no one in Section 1 beats them. But any given day…
