It’s a tradition unlike any other in Section 1 lacrosse.

Yorktown vs. Lakeland/Panas.

The game, which became known as the Murphy Cup in 1990, pits two crosstown rivals whose own growth as programs helped ignite the spread of the sport throughout Section 1.

The latest meeting is set for 7 p.m. today at Lakeland High School.

Yorktown (9-2) enters the meeting red-hot, having won five straight since suffering back-to-back losses on Long Island to Chaminade and Smithtown West. Yorktown has racked up 79 goals during that span.

Lakeland/Panas (8-4), meanwhile, has relied on its defense, led by Michael Kaplan, Ben Hylka and goalie Michael Zingaro.

Yorktown holds a 19-3 advantage in the series, which honors Yorktown lacrosse co-founder Charlie Murphy (who died in 2005 at age 93).

You can check out the game live on msgvarsity.com at 7 p.m. The full broadcast of the contest premieres on Monday at 7:30 p.m. on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum). After the premiere, you can the taped broadcast on msgvarsity.com and On-Demand Channel 614.

Also in Section 1 today, White Plains visits North Rockland at 4:45 p.m., Edgemont visits New Rochelle, Ardsley hosts Irvington and Mamaroneck plays at Eastchester at 4:30 p.m., Harrison plays at Byram Hills at 5:30 p.m. and Pearl River visits Tappan Zee at 7:30 p.m.

In the CHSAA, Iona Prep looks to snap its four-game losing streak against rival Fordham Prep.

The Long Island slate is headlined by a 4:15 p.m. game between West Islip (12-1) and Northport (8-4) at Northport. Also at 4:15 p.m., Ward Melville plays at Smithtown East.

Elsewhere in Suffolk, Smithtown West visits Connetquot in a 4 p.m. game.

It’s a busy day in Nassau County, with 16 games on the slate.

Among them: Oceanside plays at Massapequa and Hicksville hosts Hempstead at 5 p.m.

In Connecticut, defending Class M state champ Wilton visits Fairfield Ludlowe at Taft Field at 7 p.m.

New Jersey prep power Lawrenceville (11-3), coming off a big 7-6 win over Deerfield (Mass.), plays the Hill School (7-3) of Pennsylvania.

What you guys think of north rockland this year?

  23. rlaxfamily says:

I have to say that the Yorktown/Yorktown crowd was very impressive last night. The stadium was packed on both sides and along the fence line. The crop was out in full force and the pink fund-raiser t-shirts really helped liven up the joint. MSG Varsity was in top form with half time events. Hats off to all, the Murphy Cup game was a full blown entertainment zone. Congratulations to the Huskers, who certainly pulled it together in the second half for a solid finish.
