What will Yorktown do for an encore?

After an 11-9 win over previously unbeaten Darien catapulted the Huskers into the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse national rankings, Yorktown will take on one of its main challengers in Section 1 Class B — Somers.

The Tuskers are unbeaten vs. Section 1 teams, including a 9-6 win at John Jay.

For the second straight year, the game will  benefit the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund.

The Yorktown-Somers game starts at 7 p.m. after two of the other leading programs in Section 1, John Jay and Mahopac, meet in a 4:15 p.m. game at Somers. (The game was moved to Somers because of necessary repairs being made to Mahopac’s turf field.)

Bronxville, fresh off its first-ever Section 1 title, plays two-time Class A sectional finalist Lakeland/Panas in a 4:30 p.m. game at Lakeland High School.

You can watch the premiere broadcast of the game on Monday at 4 p.m. on MSG Varsity iO Channel 14. After the premiere, you can catch it anytime on On-Demand Channel 614 or msgvarsity.com.

Also in Section 1, Byram Hills hosts Horace Greeley and Mamaroneck plays at Pelham at 4:30 p.m. and Hen Hud visits Arlington at 5:15 p.m.

Two of Connecticut’s three defending state champs — Ridgefield (Class L) and Wilton (Class M) — square off in a 4:30 p.m. game at Wilton’s Fujitani Field.

Also of note in the FCIAC, New Canaan plays at Greenwich in a 4:30 p.m. game at Cardinal Stadium and Staples plays at Weston in a 5:45 p.m. contest at WHS Turf Field.

A light slate in Nassau County is highlighted by a pair of 7 p.m. games between Wantagh and host Long Beach and South Side and host Manhasset.

The Suffolk slate is headlined by a 7:30 p.m. game between Rocky Point and host Comsewogue.

One of the biggest matchups on a stacked Saturday of games features defending Connecticut Class L  champion Ridgefield taking on Section 1 power John Jay. Who do you think will win? Be sure to weigh in now in our latest poll.

  1. slacrosse says:

Big day for Bronxville as with LP today, they start a series of games vs top traditional norhtern westchester teams which I believe is a first for their program–good for them and good luck to both teams.

  2. Old Rugger says:

Love that Bville scheduled this and that the established programs put them on their schedule. Even if they don’t win one against the big teams it will do them well come playoffs, but I don’t see them beating SWR.

    • slacrosse says:

Bville has the offensive guns to score vs LP with more question of how good their D is.

Think you’re right about the result if Bville faces particularly Cold Spring Harbor having lost only 3 close games to top teams Manhasset, Summit and Syosset.

But playing better comp will make them more battle tested for the play-offs and if they face LI. They should have beaten an average Blueport/Bayport team last season but I think they lacked the “edge” to hang in there in a game that was much tougher for them vs the teams they faced during the season.

  3. Relax says:

Today Trifecta in the heart of sect.1 lax has the three teams that are jockeying for the Downstate spot vs StrongIsland. Big Day for the Section. OR & Slax are right about Bville. It’s their coming out party. After playing a lite sched last yr, L/P is playing in the hotbed. I’m sure the homefield will be an advantage. J Gras will have to go off bigtime for them to win. He’s the real deal. L/P & ‘town feel like the picks w/ J/J & Pac being a toss-up because you can’t tell what JJ team will show-up

  4. K-Love says:

    Ridgefield- 12
    Wilton- 8

    Lake/Panas- 8
    Bronxville-7

    Mahopac-7
    John Jay-5

    Arlington-12
    Hen Hud-10

    Yorktown- 16
    Somers-8

  5. Laxo says:

    ROCKY POINT @ COMSEWOGUE 730pm.
Should be an exciting game. Comsewogue will be trying to make up for the loss to SWR, but RP will not be an easy opponent. Very underrated team.

  6. laxaholic says:

Interesting slate of games today. I like the projections by K-Love on the Ridgefield vs Wilton game.

L/P vs Bronxville is interesting, I think L/P beats bronxville by more than 1, I dont see Bronxville having the talent around Jack Grass to keep possession. If L/P has the ball, theyre going to win, plain and simple.

I Im also going to disagree with the Pac vs JJ prediction as well. JJ had Manhasset on the ropes 2 weekends ago, with a decent lead going into the late 4th quarter, and they beat massapequa last weekend. Ive seen Mahopac play twice now, and I dont think they come close to the talent level required to beat either Pequa or Set. Plus, Mahopac has had a cake walk schedule up until Tuesday, I think John jay will make a statement this afternoon.

I like The Arlington pick, I dont know a ton about Hen Hud but Arlington has be coming on as of late and I think they have a good chance of beating HH.

I also agree that town will beat Somers, but I dont think that they will double them up. Its a rivalry game, lots of history between these two clubs, both are playing good lacrosse, Yorktown is coming off of the big Darien win, but Somers has seen some really good clubs in the last few weeks and I think that will help them alot today. Im thinking more of a 11-7 scoreline.

  7. Relax says:

JJ emo 2:15 into 1st no goal. PAC scores 5:53 into 1st 1-0 PAC JJ ties it w/52secs left 1-1 after 1

  8. Conor STATESly says:

With Town coming off a Huge upset win over Darien, Town has extraordinary momentum built up and will continue to fire on all cylinders. I spoke to Senior Attackman Conor Gately and he told me they are ready to come out strong and continue what they’ve got going. They know that when they play their game they are tough to beat. Another huge factor in this game will be the play by Sophomore Goalie Austin Graham. Graham is coming off arguably the best game of his life with 16 saves and 9 goals allowed against one of the more potent offenses in the nation.
Look for Yorktown to jump out to an early lead and hold on from there.

    Yorktown – 14
    Somers – 6

  9. Young Warrior says:

RF up 2-0 mid 1st vs wilton

  10. Relax says:

JJ hits the pipe 2mins into 2nd some big saves by both goalies too. PAC scores w/5:54 left in 2nd looked like it deflected in off a JJ stick 2-1 PAC JJ ties it w/3:10 left PAC hits a pipe off the FO break 3-2 PAC 47secs left in half they score 3-2 at half PAC

  11. LaxLessons.com says:

Lakeland/Panas leads Bronxville 2-1 after one. Monteferante and Walsh have split four faceoffs in a good matchup in the faceoff X.

    • LaxLessons.com says:

Bronxville and LP are tied 2-2 at the half. LP defender Mike Kaplan has held Hopkins-bound Jack Grass scoreless.

      • LaxLessons.com says:

Brian Prunty scores his second. Lakeland/Panas leads Bronxville 4-2 after three.

        • LaxLessons.com says:

          Final: Lakeland/Panas 8, Bronxville 3

          • lax says:

bville hung with them for the first half, defense and goalie played great but the offense couldnt convert opportunities and the game came apart in the second half

      • Relax says:

That spells disaster for bville their O runs thru J GRAS if he stays shut out it’ll be a sad day for the broncos

        • slacrosse says:

          Congrats to LP.

Who is LP’s pole, #23???. Never heard his name mentioned!! Yes he TOTALLY shut down Grass!!

Game was kind of even thru 3 quarters (4-2 LP). Very impressive saves by Bville and LP goalies with FO’s pretty even.

Then in Q4, LP started to take more control of the game penetrating Bville’s D for goals closer in. Question was always how good B’s D was which was OK for 3 quarters, but then wilted. The more surprising thing was how easy it seemed to shut down Grass (with a super effort by #23). Must say that Grass did look like he had the skills to do big damage if not covered well.

Bville has a good goalie and FO kid, and will be an overall better team coming out of this game.

          • laxon says:

according to twitter he’s senior captain michael kaplan. kids only been playing long pole 13 months and started lax in 9th grade. i am impressed.

          • X marks the spot says:

I guess L/P a little tougher than Scarsdale… The gap between North and south of 287 is still as wide as ever

          • Relax says:

X marks the Spots’ comment about the teams above 287 doesnt belong in this blog strand. Bville is playing ‘pac tomorrow at ‘pac & a wk later has somers at bville. Bville will be the class C rep in the downstate finals vs LI & will get bye PV & croton the north of 287 teams. I was brutal on bville last yr for not playing a tougher schedule. They got games w/ L/P, Pac & somers. Give them a break. Like last yr, they might have the best chance for repping sect.1 in the NYS final. Not any NORTHERN teams & I’m a big ‘town fan but GC is numero uno for a reason, so ease-up on the N of 287 bias X-man

  12. LaxLessons.com says:

Ridgefield leads Wilton 4-3 after one.

  13. Relax says:

JJ scores w/5:25 left in 3rd 3-3 PAC’s had the ball & shots but JJ goali’s been hot Pac’s goalie makes a big save w/3mins left & Pac scores to make it 4-3 w/2:15 game’s heatin up. PAC goalie comes up big w/1:15 left in 3rd but PAC doesn’t score off it as the 3rd qtr ends PAC goalie makes another save 4-3 PAC thru 3 great goaltending by both teams

  14. Relax says:

3:20 in PAC’s goalie makes another huge save & they streak downfield & score JJ answers 4:43into 4th 5-4 Pac. PAC hits a pipe w/5:30 left JJ ties it at 5 w/4:59 left JJ takes a 6-5 lead w/2:23 left timeout

  15. sec1 says:

  16. Relax says:

JJ takes 1st & only lead w2:23 left PAC has ball w/1:11 left but give it up w/ 33secs timeout JJ’s ball up 6-5 timeout PAC’s got to double the ball the get it but can’t score 6-5 final JJ

  18. Old Rugger says:

    Any more on Rf Wilton?

  19. LaxLessons.com says:

Ridgefield wins 15-14 in OT. Sean Wilkinson scores the game winner.

  20. Relax says:

If being on the field early warming up & going thru drills means anything. Big advantage ‘town. They’re ready to go. Not so sure about somers. Town was warming up for 40mins before somers

    • LaxLessons.com says:

Conor Gately scores in the closing seconds of the first quarter to give Yorktown a 5-1 lead over Somers after one.

  26. Relax says:

Town came out early & ready to play! It matters Vin 4-1 w/ 2mins left in the 1st is proof

  27. Relax says:

5-1 after 1 coming ready to play is something a team can control. Town’s better but somers dug a hole by not being ready to go… Surprising

Brian Prestreau for Ytown – 2g’s thus far – has a cannon – is really playing well between the lines. He is all over the field and has created a lot of “O” from up top.
