Considering the long and proud history of the St. Anthony’s/Chaminade rivalry, last year was a somewhat unusual year.
After all, it seems, much more off than not, the teams split their regular-season series before playing a “rubber match” that just happens to be for the CHSAA title.
But last year was a noteworthy exception.
That’s because Chaminade won both regular-season meetings. But in the third meeting — for the CHSAA title — it was St. Anthony’s that came out on top, winning its third straight AAA crown.
Now, it’s a new season, and it will be interesting to see what unfolds.
Round 1 is today at 2:30 p.m. at Chaminade High School’s Ott Field.
You can watch the game live on msgvarsity.com. The game will also be shown throughout the tristate region next week on MSG Varsity Channel 14, premiering on Monday at 4 p.m. in the Long Island region. After the premieres, you can watch it on On-Demand Channel 614 and msgvarsity.com.
There are also some big games in the Hudson Valley.
Suffern will be looking for its first win over John Jay in nine seasons when it hosts the Indians at noon at Suffern Middle School.
Somers and Hen Hud, who met last year in the playoffs and who have established a strong rivalry mainly through postseason encounters, square off at 11 a.m. at West Point. Since Hen Hud has moved down to Class C, there is no chance of a playoff meeting for the teams.
Arlington continues it’s too early season stretch with a 5:15 home game against Yorktown, the slam mater of Admirals coach Donny Connolly.
Brunswick, which gave Deerfield a scare last week, has another intriguing intra-state contest when it plays at Penn Charter (Pa.).
Half Hollow Hills East (N.Y.) at Georgetown Prep (Md.)
In Connecticut, Wilton, which won the Class M championship after beating six-time state champ Darien in the semifinals, hosts highly regarded New Canaan in a 7 p.m. game at Fujitani Field.
Speaking of Wilton, one of the biggest showdowns this weekend will be the FCIAC contest between the Warriors and 2010 FCIAC champion Greenwich on Saturday.

Truth, who is facing off for somers and is he good?
I saw three different players for Somers at the faceoff x today, the best of which was Alex Corpolongo. I had HH winning 14 of 20, but I could be off by one or two. HH went 7 of 10 vs LP. Too bad FO wins don’t count on the scoreboard.
It should be a great atmosphere at Fujitani Field tonight, but NC has to show they are poised to make a run at the league and state championships by handling a Wilton team replacing many key members of last year’s Class M champs. If the Warriors prevail that would leave Ridgefield and Darien as the only real contenders for the FCIAC this season.
I think the Rams prevail tonight. NC 12, Wilton 6.
Congrats to Fairfield Warde, who opened up their season with a 8-5 victory over Trumbull yesterday, matching their win total for all of 2011. Good luck the rest of the way, except next Tuesday. 🙂
In a mild surprise, Norwalk bested St. Joseph’s 7-6 in 2 OT’s, Sean Largay getting the game winner. Da’Quan Keel with 5 goals for the Bears, well done.
Unfortunately I think your point differential is about spot on though I think it will be more like 10-4 in this initial match up. Will have to see how Wiseman gets this team to progress over the season, but it looks like he’s got another front-loaded schedule to get them tested early. Some nice tilts at the end of the season with Prep and Yorktown as well.
The Norwalk program was always solid under founder Randy McCue, nice to see them get a good W to start off the season.

Final – Wilton 9 – New Canaan 5. Great win for Wilton! I’m really looking forward to next Thursday night.
You’re lookin like a novice w/ your Previous breakdown on this game. Why does everyone in ct not get it. The warriors are defending champs! Give them the respect they’ve earned! I hope the warriors smack around the non-believers All Yr Long!!
I guess Wilton put You, Darien, Ridgefield & the rest of the Novices on notice tonite! I hope they beat-up on everyone in ct. The Warrior Program is the Real Powerhouse in CT Show Respect for the defending champs!!!
Good thing I don’t predict the weather as I didn’t think they would execute that well with the big graduation losses.
It’s a nice win, but take it easy buddy. It’s a long season and the boys need to get back to work for Greenwich then Darien, Penn Charter and St. A’s. .
Once again “the bloviator” gets its wrong. Stick to hyping your wave. Worst mascot ever by the way
John Jay leads Suffern 8-3 at halftime.
Any final on JJ Suffern?
13-7 John Jay
13 goals is the right step for that new offense. Good job guys.
Somers 12 HH 4
Somers 12, HH 4 (final). Nice sunny day at scenic West Point. Not much else to be said from the Sailors fans.
Chaminade leads 5-1 after one. Goals by five different players, two by long poles. St. A’s had taken a 1-0 lead in the opening minute.
No scoring in the second quarter. Still 5-1 Chaminade. Two of it’s goals were by long poles.
Brian Sherlock scored the lone goal of the third quarter for St. Anthony’s, which trails Chaminade 5-2 after three.
Ryan Luckavic snaps a 5-5 tie with just over two minutes left in regulation. Chaminade leads 6-5 with time winding down.
Chaminade wins 6-5.
st a’s has tied at it 5.
Wantagh 16-0 over Scarsdale
G’Town Prep 19-5 over Hills East
Two pointless intersectional/regional games
does anyone have a yorktown score
Final – Brunswick 10, Penn Charter 9, OT
I heard Yorktown beat Arlington 15-2
Rye 9-6 over Greeley.
who played well?
stern, santangelo, davis for rye + great long pole play
scott, ekstrom, frieder score for hg
LP – 9
Brewster- 4
Yorktown attack looks like it has hit its stride. Look out Section One.
green white-good stuff 15-2.Lets not be so quick to judge though yet. We’ll find out how good this team is when they play li and ct.(I am a town fan)
relax there big guy, arlington isn’t exactly known for its spectacular defense
last year their defense was pretty good. arlington had couple of really solid players back there. they graduated a big class though.
Exactly – Yorktown attack will be fine – but lets relax.
Dobbs Ferry 8 PutValley 7
For Dobbs Avalos – 3 , Hays 2 goals. Latainer with 3 and the winning goal. This is a team to watch.
JJfreak says relax there big guy, arlington isn’t exactly known for its spectacular defense.Well i guess you guys would kmow because U put up a big 10 goals on them. And it was 5 3 going into 4th,if it wasn’t 4 few late goals might have been closer.I think Town attack is starting to look smooth. But it really only counts in June.
