This weekend’s John Jay-Yorktown game will have to go a long way to top this week’s John Jay-Yorktown game.

Confused?

Don’t be.

The John Jay-Yorktown boys, of course, play on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Charlie Murphy Field.

Yesterday, the schools’ varsity girls teams squared off, and Yorktown pulled out a 17-16 win as Stefanie Ranigan scored the game-winner with six second left. Ranagan had five goals and one assist. Bianca Raniolo finished with four goals and four assists.

There was another one-goal game of note on the boys side as Byram Hills rallied to beat host North Rockland 6-5 behind the strong play of Notre Dame-bound senior goaltender Andrew Larrabee.

Now, to today’s action.

John Jay and Arlington open the season with a 4:30 p.m. game at Arlington. John Jay won the teams’ meeting 17-11 last year.

Defending Section 1 Class A champ Mahopac gets things going in 2012 by hosting Putnam County rival Brewster at 4:30 p.m.

In a Section 1 vs. Section 9 clash, Pearl River takes on Minisink Valley at Torne Valley at 4:30 p.m.

Among games today on Long Island, Connetquot plays at Sachem North (5 p.m.), Northport visits Ward Melville (4:30 p.m.) and West Islip hosts Smithtown East (4:30 p.m.).

Connecticut action today includes scrimmages between Section 1 (N.Y.) squad  Mamaroneck vs. Greenwich at Cardinal Stadium at 5 p.m., Joel Barlow vs. New Canaan at Dunning Stadium in New Canaan at 4:30 p.m. and Cheshire vs. Wilton at Fujitani Field at WHS at 4:30 p.m.

Finally, in an intriguing New Jersey vs. Pennsylvania contest, Hun (N.J.) visits Chestnut Hill (Pa.) at 4:15 p.m.

Tom Cirillo fires what proved to be the game-winning goal in the fourth quarter on Tuesday as Eastchester edged Pearl River, 6-5, in its season opener.

The John Jay-Yorktown boys game is one of several big contests on Saturday, including West Islip vs. Chaminade.

  1. WestLax says:

jay wins by 3 or 4, Lambert may be best all around player in section 1. Brewster should give Mahopac trouble close gameo

    • Indian J says:

3 or 4 would be disappointing, would it not ? I would like to see 10 from a rejuvenated and healthy Jay so figure about 6 goals ? It’s hard to make predictions on opening day. Arlington is an up and coming program and has made strides and we did not hear much about Jay’s other scrimmages.

If Brewster is in fact looking to compete this would be a good place to start, but Pac by 4 or 5.

Melville over Northport in a comfortable fashion.

  2. upstate says:

that will be a really tough match for arlington against john jay today. is that arlington’s first game? we will find out if they are legit or a work in progress. Anyone heading up for that one who can give us a run down later? I would be interested to see how they look after they graduated a big senior class.

  3. LAX says:

    Updates on J vs. Arlington??

  4. Relax says:

Joe we’re talking Ranagan as in John’s Sister correct? If so, the Ranagans had a nice last few days with John having the game winner in the closing seconds of OT vs UVA to end UVA Home Dominance over JHU and then Stefanie scores in the last 6 seconds to beat JJ. That is truly impressive and makes a case for the Ranagans to be considered ‘town Lax Royalty with many others who have played for The Number 1 Lax Program in Section 1!

  5. Sailors Fan says:

Hen Hud 12 JFK 5 (final)

  6. Lax n stuff says:

Is Mahopac down or Brewster much improved – or what???

Brewster gave Pac quite a scare today. Pac pulled out a 9-8 win in OT.

    • Old Rugger says:

How was the Brewster Goalie? I saw him play this summer.

    • Indian J says:

Sounds like a good game, could be a statement that Brewster can actually contend in class B.

    • no_style_points says:

Why does it have to either? It was one game, early on and time will tell the answer to your question.

Now go, Grasshopper, play the wall ball and rip the duck.

    • upstate says:

shocked by that brewster score! i am impressed. Mahopac does have a history of starting their seasons slowly, but no team is perfect on day 1. good for brewster…maybe a solid bounce back year for them?

  7. LaxLessons.com says:

Another OT game in Section 1 today. Final: Tappan Zee 6, Eastchester 5

Peter Henninger scored the game winner. Teammate Bryan Wenke had two goals.

Tom Cirillo had five goals for Eastchester.

  8. always around says:

Final 10 4 JJ but closer than score.5 3 going into 4th.Arlington had 6 kids hurt, there hole first line out and half of there second.JD Calarusso is the real deal had 15 saves.

    • Lax Novice says:

Sounds like one team steps it up in the 4th quarter, and the other doesn’t, simple as that. As usual, only your team has guys hurt too, forget the other guys.

      • NorthGuy says:

Arlington was missing players, but not entire whole line. 2 best middies 80% coming off injuries and wore down as they were asked to do a lot/ Ads were missing 1 1st and 1 2nd line middie along with 1 startign pole. Lets not get crazy! Talking to both Jay coaches they are actually quite healthy right now. Good game, sloppy at times, Jay is the deeper more talented team(surprise), but Arlington made them earn it. Score was 5-3 with 8:30 to go. Experience, depth and execution earned them a nice victory. Who would have thought 3 years ago jay would be traveling up to Arlington and getting a serious game. Props to all the new young improving programs. Yes, you got a long way to go, but keep working hard and making strides…All the players and coaches knew it was a game yesterday and thats all that matters. Its not always about a W! Success comes in many ways.. Well done jay!

    • Geepers says:

No_Style_Points looks like he’s back – so hopefully he will chime in. But I’ve read this same post full of excuses from Arlington supporters for like 3 years. You lost. To a better team. It happens. Get over it. Get better. You have some good players. Beat a top 4 team. I’m rooting for you.

      • Pops says:

Excuses from a team that is trying to build a program with no history in it’s 10 year existance. That’s an interesting comment. Expecially in a year that most people have them being considerably down when they have never been up?. Interesting.

        • Geepers says:

Pops, win or stay quiet…You can’t come on here and say would of, could of, should of…Just doesn’t fly. I like what is going on in Arlington, I honestly do. But I’d like a signature win, and not excuses after a 6 goal loss. Maybe it’s just me.

  9. Just sayin says:

How did Erickson do for Brewster on Berardis???

  10. LI Guy says:

WM 10, Northport 6 … John Edmonds 4-1 for WM

    Baldwin 8, Port 5

  11. SawitLive says:

Erikson shutdown Berardis. Pac won in triple overtime. It was a great game. Felt like a sectional playoff game…Very intense from start to finish.

  12. Pac Sun says:

Bottom line – Pac won. Pac 1-0. Brewster 0-1.

  13. sec1 says:

JJ / Arlington, both teams very sloppy so many un forced area I lost count.
It was there first game of course, it’s true that Arlington was missing 4 players and two who player but are injured in someway, it will be interesting to see what happens a season moves along, I will JJ is down from other yr, but there are some nice underclass men who are getting time if they grow sooner than later then they can cause some trouble in B, and having Schurr and Nolan leadership will always give you a chance. I don’t see anyone being able to prevent Town from their 35th Sec Title. But as they say that’s why they play.

  14. DPAC says:

Sloppy first game for both Pac and Brewster.
Brewster had every opportunity to win the game being up 8 to 4 with 5 min to go. Brewster D did not do good when Pac attacked the net. Brewster goalie had a great game and didn’t deserve to lose. Erikson had a great game but didn’t get help from his other defenders. Brewster’s middie #16 has a wicked shot. I think he had 3 goals. The only way Pac could stop him was to keep him face-guarded and not allow him to shoot. Astrologo played a solid D and Fetzer held on his side. While Berardis was held in check for most of the game you know he will bounce back. Great game for Pac’s Evans who won the majority of his face-offs and scored the tying and winning goals. He needed to step it up and he did. It wasn’t a pretty game for Pac, but I’m sure they will take it.

  15. W says:

#16 Liam Daros all section from Brewster

    • Geepers says:

wow – I missed that calendar that awarded all section picks after 1 game in march. Liam Daros is an outstanding young man, and lax player but can we get til May before we hand out the hardware.
