The first full weekend of the brand-new college lacrosse season has produced a surprise.

No. 9-ranked Notre Dame’s men’s lax team was dominant defensively in a 7-3 season-opening win against No. 2-ranked visiting Duke. After falling behind 2-0, ND scored seven unanswered goals.

Goalie John Kemp equaled a career high with 14 saves. Senior midfielder Max Pfeifer registered two goals and two assists for the Irish. Sophomore midfielder Jim Marlatt scored two goals in his collegiate debut.

The three goals allowed marked the fewest against a ranked opponent since Notre Dame beat then No. 10 Ohio State 9-2 on May 4, 2008.  Duke scored 16 goals in their season-opening win over Rutgers on Feb 11.

“Notre Dame completely dominated Duke offense,” wrote ESPN lacrosse analyst Paul Carcaterra on Twitter. “ND forced Duke attack to beat them and put mids in bad shooting angles.”

Also of note today, top-ranked and defending national champion Virginia edged No. 20 Drexel 9-8.

In action on Friday, Johns Hopkins pulled away for a 12-6 win against Towson.

I know ND holds the ball and has a great D, but Duke’s offense couldn’t have looked worse.

  2. Gael Wins says:

Congrats to former Iona Prep star Nick Trizano who had 2 g’s for Drexel vs UVa.

Interesting start to the season. Should be pretty unpredictable up to Memorial Day Weekend.
