While much of the attention of the lacrosse world has been focused on the  US Lacrosse National Convention, which got under way yesterday in Philadelphia, another noteworthy event was also held.

Major League Lacrosse’s annual collegiate draft.

Former Smithtown West standout Rob Pannell  (pictured at left), coming off a 42-goal, 47 assist season at Cornell, was selected first by the Long Island Lizards.

There were plenty of other players from the tristate area selected in the draft, which was held late last night.

In fact, six of the first 10 players taken were from either New York, New Jersey or Connecticut: Pannell; Mike Manley (No. 3, Penn Yan, N.Y., High School); C.J. Costabile (No. 5, New Fairfield, Conn., HS); Chad Wiedmaier (No. 7, Delbarton Prep, N.J.); Rob Rotanz (No. 8; Fairfield Prep, Conn.); and Justin Turri (West Islip, N.Y., HS). Wiedmaier is a Chatham, N.J., resident.  Rotanz is a Westport, Conn., resident.

You can check them out now. Here are the entire results of the draft:
