Michigan is making its mark.

The Wolverines have yet to play a game at the Division I level, but the Big Blue is quickly becoming a big presence on the recruiting trail.

Andrew Hatton is the latest standout from the nation’s No. 1 lacrosse hotbed, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, to commit to the Wolverines.

Hatton is a junior defenseman at Fairfield Prep who also sees action at long-stick middie.

Hatton is a 5-foot-10, 180-pound righty

Another Prep player, senior long-stick middie Charles Keady, is also headed to Ann Arbor.

Here’s a Q&A with Andrew on his choice:

What were the main factors in your decision?
I knew I wanted to play at a Division I school with a great athletic tradition and Michigan certainly has that.  Also, I will have a great opportunity to excel academically at Michigan.

What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
I considered a number of other schools including Dartmouth, Villanova and Brown.  I felt that Michigan was the best fit for me.

What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
I believe that one of my strengths is my footwork and ability to pick up ground balls and move the ball up the field.  I think I am fundamentally strong.

What areas of your game do you think you need to improve on?
Footwork is always something you can work on.  I will be working hard to improve my strength and conditioning to be able to compete at the Division I level.

When did you first realize you had the potential to play at the college level?
Over the past summer, I competed in a number of tournaments against some of the top players and teams.  I believe that I matched up pretty well against some top players.

What were some of the big summer showcase events you’ve competed in the last couple of years and how did you do?
I was named to the all-star team both nights at Blue Chip 225 in the elite group.  I was also named to the all-star team at King of the Hill.  I also participated in Tri-State and Brine Shootout.

Judging by the early results, I think UM will be a major player on the recruiting circuit sooner rather than later.
