Johns Hopkins University-bound senior midfielder Tommy Gordon and Garden City will play Round 2 against archrival Manhasset at 6 p.m. today at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium in the Nassau County Class B title game.

Ever since we passed along the news last fall that Manhasset, the two-time defending Class C state champions, would be moving up to Class B this season, we started referring to this year’s 120th Woodstick Classic as “Round 1.”

That’s because a second meeting, for the Nassau County Class B title, seemed almost ordained and inevitable.

Well, here we are,  more than a half year later, and that meeting is tonight.

It’s Garden City vs. Manhasset for the Section 8 Class B crown at 6 p.m. at Hofstra University.

The winner advances to the Long Island championship game on Saturday at Stony Brook University, with a berth in the June 8 downstate semifinals on the line.

The Set-GC rematch is the subject of our latest poll question.

Who do you think will win the game — and by how much?

To vote, go to the right panel of this page. Then, just scroll past the “New Comments” and “Popular” tabs and click on “Poll,” and then cast your vote from the choices available, or write in your choice if it’s not listed.

Here’s the rundown for today’s Nassau title-game tripleheader at Shuart Stadium:

Class A: No 1 Farmingdale vs. No. 2 Massapequa, 3:30 p.m.

Class B: B1-1 Garden City vs. B2-1 Manhasset, 6 p.m.

Class C: No. 1 Cold Spring Harbor vs. No. 2 Friends Academy, 8:15 p.m. (time approximate)

    AA’S

    Mabus, Schulte-town
    Foley, Bernardis-Pac
    Weil-Jay
    Donohue, Schurr-Somers
    Caffrey-LP
    McCormick-Bville

    Could be picked

    Walter-Jay
    Bota, #24 (Cirillo?)-Pac
    Gately-Town
    Prunty-LP
    Lombardo-Somers

    • section1 says:

i think ferguson should be one

      • slacrosse says:

Certainly one of the best LPM in the Section but left him off as not sure he has realistic shot coming from less then a top tier team. Would be happy to see him be an AA. Other real good poles that come to mind are Dalton (Somers) Landis (Pelham), Lambert (Jay) and Collins (Rye). Guessing any Rye kids lost consideration losing to Jay in the quarters.

Well it’ll all be over soon.

        • slacrosse says:

          No Ferguson like I said.

          • Connor's dad says:

Thanks for the support and the good words. I knew it was a long shot since Mamk did not make it far in sectionals, but it was nice to know that some people thought he deserved consideration.

          • slacrosse says:

Skilled very tough player. As I’ve said before his performance vs Bville was one of the most, if not the most, dominating I’ve seen by a LPM all season and I’ve been to lots of games played by many of the best teams in the region.

Hell of a hockey player also.

  5. justlaxin says:

I think Gately should be. Qb of best offense in section. He is their leading scorer. Gets my vote even over Weil or Donahue. Since section finals which should count….playoff lacrosse is biggest of all.

    Schuldt, Mabus, and Gately Town
    Schurr Somers
    Foley Pac
    Caffrey and Prunty LP
    McCormick Bville
    Near Bville

I was not impressed with Weil or Walter under pressure in Town game. They have been pretty good all year, I grant that but I dont think AA caliber.
    Next crop
Keolsch, Lambert, Mariano, Berardis, Carey, Fahey, Ferguson

    • LAX says:

How can you say that about Weil, with Daniello going down, Weil rose up to the occasion and become jays top dodger. He led a team that went to the sectional championship in goals, and he put up two goals against yorktown and an assist in that game. He definitely is All American caliber, which is exactly why he got it. On top of that, although Lambert is young, he is one of if not the best defensemen in the section. Don’t see too many people committed to a school like UNC as a sophomore. not saying he got shafted, but Just a thought.

      • Long Time laxer says:

Having seen lambert only on the web, I have no doubt that he is a great player. But remember, a kid committing to a school is not the same as a school committing to a kid. Schools can’t and don’t commit to the player. There is nothing official until those papers are signed in November. Players change their minds and schools change their coaches, it can throw a real wrench into the process. Ask JoJo Marasco.

  11. LI Guy says:

    3-1 GC HT

  12. jack says:

AA HV- Schultd, Mabus, Foley, Schurr, Weil, Pronty, Caffrey, Near, Mccormick

  13. jack says:

    Congrats to HV AA

  14. jack says:

Mabus, Schuldt Town Caffrey,Prunty Land Near, Mccormick Bville Foley Pac Schurr Somers Weil Jay

  15. Joe Lombardi says:

Here are this year’s Hudson Valley All-Americans, as selected tonight. All nine players are seniors:

Rob Caffrey, attack, Lakeland/Panas, College – Providence
TJ Foley, midfield, Mahopac, College – Drexel
Justin Mabus, midfield, Yorktown, College – Towson
Charlie McCormick, midfield, Bronxville, College – Georgetown
Jack Near, midfield, Bronxville, College – Notre Dame
Connor Prunty, midfield, Lakeland/Panas, College – Siena
Ty Schuldt, midfield, Yorktown, College – Hartford
Eddie Schurr, defense, Somers, College – Johns Hopkins
Jake Weil, midfield, John Jay, College – Dartmouth

    • Lax Games says:

      Mids take it – only 1 pole and 1 A, no G

      Congrats to all

    • sectone says:

Joe, when will all-section be announced?

    • Long Time laxer says:

I guess the only Question I have is how can only one pole be among the top 9 players in the section. Does that mean that players like Lambert, Ferguson, and Collins did not have as big an impact on the games and their teams seasons as the kids who score goals. Just because they have goals which are in the box score, and poles only have groundballs and take aways seems kind of short sighted by the coaches. Anybody here remember Bill Russell?

      • jeffreyp says:

i don’t know about the other kids you mentioned but i know for a fact lambert had a bigger impact on his team than anyone else. had more goals than one of their starting attackman.

  16. buzlax says:

nice job well deserved rob and conner much deserved

  17. Traditions says:

Nice rally by Set, which was down 5-2 after 3. It’s 5-4 GC midway thru fourth.

  18. Setter says:

Tompkins ties it at 5-5 with just under 5 minutes left!

  19. Joe Lombardi says:

Just a reminder, you can get real-time updates on the Manhasset-Garden City game from MSG Varsity’s Tom Liodice here:

  20. LI Guy says:

Patric Berkery goal with 1:15 left wins it for GC 6-5. Old School Lax!

  21. slacrosse says:

    Congrats to the AA’s.

I never comment on who should NOT be selected or be off a list for players (sometimes I do for Coaches) so I’ll just say:

I think that Mahopac deserved to have 2 players on the list led most likely by Bernardis with others considered.

Somers had a successful season and didn’t get there w/o fantastic goal scoring in clutch situations. So Somers deserved to have at least Donohue with Lombardo considered.

    • laxman says:

yes, but it’s quite difficult to take out any of the boys on the list there is now.

      • slacrosse says:

Yeah all really top players that deserved to be seriously considered for AA. That’s why can only comments on who I think deserved to be on that list that was not. No comment on whose place they’d take.

    • sect1lax says:

yes i agree that *Berardis (not bernardis) and donohue should be on that list for sure. but at least berardis has next year

      • slacrosse says:

Yeah. Winner of Class A with an OT win over Town only gets 1 selection? Not saying that winning Class A “requires” more then 1 AA–saying that there’s a reason they won–they have more then 1 AA quality player.

        • Pac Lax says:

Berardis and Hynes(soph)LPM will be AA in the future for Pac. Two kids can play…..Good Luck the rest of the way boys.

  22. D-Pac says:

Congratulations to all the AA selections. You are the best of the best and gave us some great lacrosse to watch this year. Good luck in college!

    • slacrosse says:

Good luck to you guys going forward. Expect for sure to see Pac face-off vs LI at White Plains.

    • outsidelookingin says:

I’d be worried first about getting my the Shen/Nisky winner tonight. That game, by no means, will be a cake walk.

      • slacrosse says:

Agree and have mentioned before that this Pac game will be the real (and only) test for Section 1 up in Albany.

      • D-Pac says:

For sure. Pac will need to bring their A game, no pun intended. Should be a great game whoever we play, but let’s get by Pine Bush today. Pac has a habit of playing down to their competition, if in fact you consider Pine Bush to be a lesser team.
