Joe Costigan and New Canaan host Darien in the renewal of several big-time rivalry games today, including Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown as well as Chaminade and Manhasset.

Today is May 7.

It’s undoubtedly a date that has been on the minds of players from several of the premier program in the nation’s No. 1 hotbed for lax, the Hudson Valley/Long Island/Connecticut region, for months.

Since we announced here shortly after the new year the dates for the renewal dates of these rivalries, they have been on the back of plenty of people’s minds.

Now, they are front and center, most notably Darien vs. New Canaan, Lakeland/Panas vs. Yorktown and Chaminade vs. Manhasset.

At 4 p.m. at New Canaan’s Dunning Stadium, the Rams host six-time Class M Connecticut state champion Darien.

New Canaan is looking to snap a six-game losing streak against the Blue Wave in what has been an epic rivalry.

In 2007, the Rams snapped Darien’s 54-game winning streak against Connecticut teams with a 5-4 win in the FCIAC semifinals. (Darien’s lone loss in 2006 was a 10-8 setback to John Jay.)

The Darien-New Canaan game will be shown live on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum).

Then, at 7 p.m. at Charlie Murphy Field in Yorktown Heights, is the 22nd edition of the Charlie Murphy Cup, which will be shown next week on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum) as well as msgvarsity.com and MSG Varsity On-Demand Channel 614.

The annual game — and field — honor Murphy, who co-founded the Yorktown program in the mid 1960s with Jim Turnbull (the first coach in program history, who guided the Huskers to six state titles). Murphy’s house in the west end of Yorktown served as a meeting place for up-and-coming players to work on their skills and seek input from older players.

Last night on MSG Varsity’s “High School SportsDesk,” we took a look at the man who pioneered the growth of lacrosse not only at Yorktown, but the entire Hudson Valley, Charlie Murphy, and the scores of current varsity coaches he influenced.

In case you missed that report, you can check it out by clicking here.

The segment runs four minutes.

You can check out all the interviews we did for the segment in their entirety, plus much more on the newly created “Murphy Cup Central” page at msgvarsity.com. Check out the page here.

The members of both current coaching staffs are very familiar with the rivalry.

To say the least.

Yorktown head coach Dave Marr was a member of the Husker team that beat Lakeland/Panas 7-6 in the first Murphy Cup back in 1990. Huskers assistant Sean Carney played on the first LP team to win a Cup, back in 1994.

As if that’s not enough, LP head coach Jim Lindsay scored four goals to lead Lakeland/Panas to a 7-4 win over Yorktown 7-4 in the 1997 Class A final at Mahopac, one of just three sectional final losses for Yorktown since 1979.

Though Yorktown holds a commanding 18-3 lead in the all-time Murphy Cup series, LP is actually looking for its third straight win over the Huskers. Last year, the Rebels beat Yorktown twice in the same season for the first time, including 8-7 in overtime in the sectional final.

Chaminade and Manhasset are not in the same league or conference, of course. Unlike Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown and Darien and New Canaan, there’s no chance the Flyers and Indians can play in the postseason.

But it’s always a battle when two of the top programs in Nassau County square off.

Case in point, last year, when Manhasset won 7-6 in OT, one of just two one-goal games for ‘Set in a 20-0 season. (The other was Garden City.)

Also of note, Brien McMahon plays at Norwalk under the lights in the “Battle of Norwalk.”

There are also some other noteworthy games in Section 1 besides the Murphy Cup.

Rockland rivals Clarkstown North and Clarkstown South square off at 6 p.m. at South.

The host Vikings will be holding events from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. to assist active duty deployed men and women in the Armed Forces.  Players will be collecting personal items that are not accessible to military personal.

For more, click here.

Suffern, which dropped a one-goal decision to defending Section 1 Class A champ Lakeland/Panas, faces a Mahopac team that beat LP on Thursday in a 2 p.m. game at Suffern Middle School.

Fox Lane looks to knock Pleasantville from the unbeaten ranks when it hosts the Panthers at 7 p.m.

Rye and Rye Country Day have their annual “Battle of Rye” at 4 p.m. at RCDS.

In an interesting HV vs. LI battle, John Jay visits Massapequa.

Before we run down the schedule, don’t forget to post updates from the field with your mobile devices. You can post them directly as comments on this thread or, if it’s easier, email them to us at info@laxlessons.com.

l/p ytown rivalry is quite possibly the best rivalry ever. ytowns offense is too scrawny and weak for much firepower except for schuldt. their defense is good however. their offense scores mostly on garbage goals or from defenses just not playing simple defense. l/p defense does slack too at times, other times they look really good and on point. their offense when in synch can rip defenses apart piece by piece. gonna be a battle there tomorrow. could go either way, depends on who shows up on defense

  2. Lax n stuff says:

    Set 10, Nade 7
    Town 12, LP 5
    Darien 10, NC 6

Let’s hear everybody else’s picks for these and other games today…

  3. laxfan says:

L/P vs Yorktown is a good rivalry but there are plenty of good rivalries. I don’t think there really is any argument though that Manhasset vs Garden City is now and will be as long as the two schools play one another; the greatest. It’s the granddaddy of all lacrosse rivalries and there can never be one to supplant because it is now and forever will be the longest running one. In the HS lacrosse world it’s Packers vs Bears and has transcended itself to the point that even if there were some lean years when one was clearly better than the other it would hardly matter or tarnish it.

    • Indian J says:

      Jay 10 Massapequa 9
      Darien 14 New Canaan 7
      Yorktown 12 L/P 5
      Mahopac 13 Suffern 6
      Manhasset 10 Chaminade 7

Woodstick Classic is awesome. I used to also love the Wilton v. Darien rivalry that went up to about 2000 before Darien started winning all the time.

  4. The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

    Suffern 12, Mahopac 9…….book it

  5. Jaybird says:

    JJ 10, Pequa 8
    NC 9, Darien 8, OT
    Town 14, LP 6
    Nade 9, Set 7

  6. IndianChief45 says:

Let’s be real. Pac is rolling, with wins over Town and LP. …

    Pac 11, Suffern 4

  7. Conor STATESly says:

Today is the day that many of us having been looking forward to all season until now. Tonights game has been anticipated since the day it was announced. This classic annual showdown is the biggest game of the season to each of these teams and in this one there is one thing for sure, both teams have something to prove. We have the Lakeland/Panas Rebels coming out to win their second straight murphy cup and their third straight win over the Yorktown Huskers. Then you have the Yorktown Huskers who are looking to win their 19th murphy cup and keep their commanding lead.

Both teams have many weapons for today and it should be a great Saturday Night Lacrosse Game. This year the game will be on Yorktown’s home turf, Charlie Murphy Field, so expect a HUGE turnout from yorktown fans and a very hostile environment from both teams. As many of you know the coaching staff from both sides of this matchup have a long history with the Murphy Cup. Coach Dave Marr for the Huskers was on Yorktown for the first ever murphy cup which the Huskers won and coach Carney was on Lakelands first ever team to win a murphy cup. For the Rebels, Coach Jim Lindsay brought the Rebels to win one of its 3 section titles over the huskers.

This is a historic matchup and im sure it will prove to be everything it is hyped up to be. With that being said, Yorktown’s middies led by Justin Mabus and Ty Schuldt have proved themselves throughout the season and will be very difficult to defend tonight. Schuldt is coming off a string of great games and has been an unstoppable force in the past few games.

    Town 12 L/P 8

  8. rob says:

Joe , Rye and Rye country have not split the last couple of years, Rye has won for probably 6 or 7 in a row

    • Joe Lombardi says:

That’s correct, Rob. The closes RCDS came during that stretch was an 8-6 loss to the Garnets in ’09.

  9. SirLaxalot says:

Ytown 14, LP 7 – Anyone who’s been paying attention would have a hard time envisioning this game being close with the way LP defense has been playing

    Set 8, Chaminade 7

    Darien 10, New Canaan 6

    Pequa 9, JJ 8 – OT

  10. Young warrior says:

Darien has beaten the decent fciac teams by exactly 7. I say that continues….wave 13-6.

  11. ReLAX says:

    Set 10 Nade 9 OT
    Darien 12 NC 7
    ‘pequa 10 JJ 7
and for the guy who called town’s O scrawny
    Huskers 15 L/P 6

  12. Lax Guy says:

5-1 Pac over Suffern, beginning of the 3rd

  13. SoLax says:

Irvington up on Ardsley 6-2 at half

  14. JJFan says:

Any word on the JJ Score?

  15. BigBadBear says:

a fun half with Darien up 5 – 3…Darien the better team, and it sure is fun watching the run and gun style, but I think they like that outside laser a bit too much, if they settle and wowrk a bit they should be way in front, given the advanatge they have in time of pocession…NC goalie very good and they are very opportunistic…Maybell, what a rocket, a junior Wharton

  16. BigBadBear says:

I can NOT believe the Seawolves lose to Hartford…Hartford? goal with .01 seconds left…I think the ‘Brook is out of the NCAA’s

    • wizard2 says:

and /briarcliff lost to Putnam Valley, bad day for the Bear

    • Lax Novice says:

Neither Stony Brook nor Hofstra covered themselves in glory in their league playoffs. Will the NCAA tournament committee be kind to at least one?

    • ReLAX says:

Shocking! I was @ SB for both of their playoff games last yr. Thought they were here to stay. Loved it when they beat the Tierney’s & Denver!! SHOCKING What happened?

      • BigBadBear says:

they got crushed on FO’s, particualrly in the first half…D never their strong point, Hartford really wanted it, the game winning goal was all desire and toughness..should have also been a flag for a late/high hit, but it didn’t matter in the end

  17. Syracuse says:

Hey guys. I got Massapequa leading John Jay 5-4 at halftime. I’ll be providing updates from here on out and then from the Murph Cup.

  18. Syracuse says:

It was 5-4 Massapequa over John Jay at halftime. That’s all I know.

  19. cornercutter says:

somers over greeley 15-8. much closer than the score, but greeley fell apart with a few minutes to go. 33 on greeley Alex scott put up 6 goals against schurr, look out for this kid in the future.

    • somers-hg says:

this kid needs to be consdiered among the best attackman int he section. no one has been able to do that to schurr all year. according to greeleys scoring book, hes has around 60 points already this seaon, only 12 games in.

  20. Syracuse says:

JJ depleted by injuries or they never got off the bus ?

More like never got out of the locker room at halftime. Seems to be that one team is making adjustments at halftime, and the other is not.

  25. Syracuse says:

    L/P leads Yorktown 4-3 after 1.

  26. Syracuse says:

Yorktown and Lakeland/Panas tied 5-5 midway through the 2nd. Mariano has 3 goals for Town.

  36. slacrosse says:

    Rye 12-2 over RCDS

  37. sir laxalot says:

The wall ballers must be crying the blues after a weak performance at home today. If Suffern wants to be considered among the big dogs, they must stop playing and beating up on all the weak teams. Come across the river and chalenge youselves. Then and only then you will progress into a real contender. But for now you are just a second rate team!!!!

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

There is no crying in Wall Ball Balling. We love our team and we are already making big plans for our sectional games. Suffern will not have to go over the bridge in Sectionals because they could grab the 2 seed (Mahopac will probably get the 1) but Suffern will have home field throughout because the finals are either going to be at Suffern Middle School or Tourne Valley from what I am hearing. WE ARE CONFIDENT IN OUR BOYS!

      • D-Pac says:

Boy, not happy with the performance by the Wall Ballers. You stated that they are better than Town’s Crop. Heck, they aren’t even better than the Mahopac Maniacs. More Pac fans made the trip than Suffern fans for their own home game. When the Ballers can grow to about 50 students then we’ll see. For now, practice, practice, practice.

        • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

We the WBB don’t like the comparisons to the Crop because we don’t play them and they obviously have a much larger following. What we lack in size we make up for in creativity. I would bet the farm that we have the best goal chants around hands down.

        • Th Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

I have been saying all year that what the WBB lacks in size we make up for with creativity and passion. We have the best goal chants around hands down. VIVA BUTTERFLAG

      • Pops says:

New rochelle and arlington have a chance to be seeded higher then suffern. Many games to be played this week!

        • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

This is true. Nothing is set in stone and it will be interesting to see how things turn out.

  38. Pv LAX says:

Yes.. they do play a lot of weak teams. two teams that they have played over on this side are losses. yea they beat PV. but not Mahopac or L/P. maybe next year the can play Somers jjay Arlington.

    • Lion says:

Like it’s easy getting on Yorktown, JJ or Somers schedule. They played 2 good cross river teams in Pac and LP. They are close enough to Jersey and should be getting on Don Bosco or Bergen achedule.

      • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

They also played Warwick who is a top contender in Section 9 from what I hear. I am not saying Section 9 is near as competitive as Section 1 but it is tough to get on some teams schedule so you have to do the best with what you got.

  39. ReLAX says:

I’ll be 4 for 4 & on the money w/ my predictions if Manhasset played a close one w/ ‘nade…anyone got a score 10-9 in OT maybe?

  40. bh says:

BH played Seaford out on LI and lost 8-6 in a very even and competitive match-up. BH played well enough to win and had some looks in the closing minutes down a goal, but couldn’t get one.

    • ReLAX says:

Great job getting out of the section & crossing a bridge to play the 8-3 Vikings who although they lost, played Friends & have CSH next. Hopefully, it helps get the kids ready for your playoff run. BH plays a good schedule. Wish you guys great Success in the rest of the season

  41. Fox Trot says:

Fox Lane won 10 of 13 FOs in handing Pville their first loss 8-4

  42. IslandLaxpert says:

    Final: Set 3, Nade 2

Sounds like a throwback lacrosse game — or actually more like a baseball score. Quinn Moroney scored the winning goal with three minutes left. Apparently there was a huge crowd. Anywhere there who can shed some light on why it was so low scoring?

    • Lax Games says:

      Good defense, maybe?

    • SEt says:

It was mostly long possessions. Both teams definitely had their chances. Set probably had the better chances overall. Great goaltending too as we watched two of the best netminders in the country in Morelli and Connors. Both defenses played very well. Great game.

  43. underrated says:

rye vs. new canaan= 12-8 win for rye

darien vs new canaan= 11-5 win for darien

rye scored more goals than darien on this powerful new canaan team… not saying rye is better than darien, lets be clear- darien would handle rye and win easily, but people need to stop sleeping on this rye team. They lost a few close early season games where their offense wasnt clicking yet and they were missing a few players to injury. They have now won 5 or 6 straight scoring 12 or 13 goals in each contest. They have a ton of offensive firepower and arguably the best attack line in the section to go along with a rock solid defense… this team is clicking when it counts and i wouldnt want to be the team who sees them in the playoffs.

    • laxr says:

Rye is a very hot team right now, and will make some noise in the Section 1 playoffs. I think it’s a tad misleading when you say that Rye scored more goals against NC than Darien, because as has been said before, Darien effectively sat on the ball for most of the fourth quarter.

  44. Rlaxfamily says:

All I wanted for mothers day was the murphy cup – thanks boys!!

  45. i'm blue da ba dee da ba die says:

Nobody every said anything about being better than the CROP. It was a weak day for us though, probably our worst showing of the season. In total we have about 35 of us and you’ll see the number grow once the playoffs start!

Plus, our goal chants are the best in the section by far. I’d like to see the Mahopac Maniacs try and beat us there.

Also, Mahopac had more fans than us at the game but we were still louder than them (and we were losing). Explain that one to me.

    • Lax Observer says:

If LP plays as well as they did vs Yorktown in the playoffs they will win the Class A title again. End of story.

      • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

I agree that the Class A title is wide open but its gonna be tough for LP because with their current downfall they may have to go on the road in every sectional game. Not that they can’t do it because they certainly have the talent but it just makes it that much harder

      • D-Pac says:

So Pac’s win over Town means nothing. If Pac plays the way it did against Town and LP, they win Class A. End of story. If they play the way they did against HH, Arlington or Suffern then I will agree with you. End of story.

      • sect1lax says:

how can u say that it makes no sense. bc they lost to pac by 9 goals. AND Pac beat ytown and lp lost by like 5 goals. this doesnt make any sense

      • laxfan says:

        agreed,

these “who beat who” arguements are fun but mean nothing in the grand scheme of things. you could say anything, jay had a bad night at town, town had a bad night at pac, lp had a bad night at pac, pac had a bad night against somers and jay. list goes on and on. when it comes down to it teams like town and lp are hounded by bloggers come playoff time in similar ways, and they show up to play in the playoffs. until pac shows me the ability to do that, i can’t make any predictions.

        • D-Pac says:

Agree totally. It’s put up or shutup. Not happy with Pac’s performance against Brewster and we’ll see what happens today against Greeley. They can catch Pac sleeping, as they are a scrappy team. If Pac doesn’t start playing with attitude it will be an early playoff exit. They definately have the players, but sometimes there seems to be a lack of motivation. They seem to kick it up a notch against the more established programs, but the playoffs are different. You can be sure that Arlington, Suffern and especially Lakeland will be ready for a rematch.

    • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

      Amen brother. VIVA BUTTERFLAG

    • sect1lax says:

in the end does it matter who is louder? or who won the game?

      • LoveTownLax says:

exactly sect1lax…. however.. yes D-Pac, Mahopac beat Yorktown in Overtime….. but that game was without a doubt the WORST game of Town’s season… (start with 27 turnovers – yikes!) and it doesn’t define the whole season for either team. It counts D-Pac… as one game in a a 16 game season!!! AND it is not the “end of story” just because you, D-Pac say it is… That is why they play games in the playoffs… Why not let your boys take the field and play instead of pontificating about how they ARE going to win? And whining how they should be ranked first in Section One because they beat Town? Remember Pac lost to Somers and John Jay….. And Town beat them both!!!!!!!!! And what difference does it make where random bloggers rank your team? How about this:

        1. Pac
        2. Pac
        3. Pac
        4. Pac

and everybody else is terrible. Happy now?

        • Pac Lax says:

Very Happy. Keep up the love fest. Very touchy LoveTownLax. I guess you are still mad, mad, mad, mad.

          • LoveTownLax says:

            D-Pac and Pac Lax..

Not mad at all… a game is just a game and as I said on the day Town played Pac, for sure Pac played well and was one goal better. You have a very talented team – many great players. But after weeks of reading post after post of various Pac fans (didn’t mean to imply that #1 comment was yours D-Pac) bemoaning where they fall in a ranking, or how they WILL win, or how they beat a team by 7 who beat the other one by 3 which means they will win, are being viewed unfairly, “whoa is us,” etc. etc. etc… I responded, with a little exasperation. So many posts from Pac fans are of this nature… From those “in the know,” L/P played one of their strongest games against Town! and good for them! It was a great game… So your re-match (I do think it will be L/P – Pac..) may be great game too! Who knows what the “end of the story” will be? (and I did read your full post) You have a lot to be proud of, but just let them play! On any given day… right?

Love Town, who said I ranked Pac first. I probably would have themm at 3 or 4. I never said that. My “end of Story” comment was from the post of someone saying that if LP plays the way they played against Town they would win the section end of story. If you read my post I even said if we play the way we played against a few teams there is no way we would win the section.

Does it matter that I don’t wear underwear to Suffern Lax games? No but it makes things more enjoyable for me. The same goes for the WBB and if we are loud.

I agree. Bizarre. Goal chants? and whose are better? Is this what we have been reduced to? what’s next? who does the better square dance?

        • The Boy Who Cried Wolf says:

In Suffern the WBB are passionate about two things: Suffern Lax and Singing. We find our goal songs are a great way to cheer on our friends while being able to showcase our vocal talents. And if it is a hoedown you want I can square dance with the best of them. But in all seriousness we are only at the games and on this blog to cheer on our friends and have fun because it should be about the teams and not bloggers like us. But really let me know about that dance off because I AM SO READY!

if the contest comes down to squaredancing i will square my set and allemande left my corner like it’s nobody’s business.

wanna know why? cause the WBB bring it.
