Senior crease attackman Brett Emanuel and Somers host two-time defending Section 1 Class C champ Putnam Valley today in a game that was scheduled for yesterday, but postponed by thunderstorms. Somers won the 2009 Class B sectional title.

We’re just a day away from Woodstick, gang.

The nation’s longest uninterrupted high school lax rivalry will be resumed tomorrow night at 7 p.m. as Manhasset hosts Garden City in the 120th meeting of the Woodstick Classic.

If you plan on going to the game, be sure to arrive early to get a parking spot — and a seat for that matter.

Also, in case you haven’t heard, the game will be broadcast live on MSG Varsity Channel 14 (Optimum).

Now, to today’s slate. West Islip, fresh off its dramatic 7-6 overtime win against Ward Melville (in case you were away in Peru or somewhere – a game decided when Duke-bound senior goalie Kyle Turri scored on an end-to-end drive), is back in action. The Lions host Northport.

Also in Suffolk Class A, Smithtown West, which was thoroughly impressive in beating Sachem North on Tuesday, hosts Walt Whitman, which features one of the region’s premier talents, another Duke-bound player, midfielder Myles Jones. Did we mention the Bulls have a Duke-bound player of their own in senior attackman Kyle Keenan.

(I’ve just been notified that we’ve set a record for most uses of the phrase “Duke-bound” in a limited span of text.)

Also of note in Suffolk, Ward Melville hopes to bounce back from the WI loss by playing a talented Connetquot team that features Hopkins-bound defenseman Michael Pelligrino.

In Section 1, Bronxville, off to a 9-0 start, hopes to beat Mamaroneck for the second time this season. The Broncos won 10-6 in Game 2 of the season on April 6.

Also of note, Dobbs Ferry is back in action after Wednesday’s huge win over New Rochelle. The Eagles host neighbor Hastings at 4:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Eagles, a first-year varsity program, prevailed in overtime against New Rochelle 10-9 in a league showdown. Dobbs won it when Sean Hays scored off a feed from Darien Bica.

West Islip Lions vs Northport Tigers, in a battle of the big cats Ill take the lions 13-4

  2. Lax-a-lot says:

Kevin Christopher is also out for the regular season with a hamstring injury.

    Somers – 11
    Put Valley -6

    Bronxville -12
    Mamo – 5

    P-Ville – 14
    Ossining – 5

  3. laxfan says:

I would say today is a must win game for Mamaroneck coming off a stream of surprising and disappointing losses. A win for them today would certainly put a band aid on the wound and allow them to salvage a bit of their season. On the other hand it is also somewhat imortant, if not in the standings, then in how they are going to be perceived as a team for Bronxville. If they want to be taken seriously they have to dispatch with a team that has to be back on its heels but also to understand that any team they play at this point is going to be looking at it like it’s a big game for them. I think it’s fair to say that a team has moved to that elusive “next level” when every team it plays would look at a victory as a signature win. To me when that happens its the start of the 2nd half of the season when you have a pretty good idea of the contenders and the pretenders.

  4. Old Rugger says:

Say LI Lax (or anyone else with LI experience) how are Pequa and Dale this year they are usually some of the stronger A’s in Nassau?

    SN 10 East Islip 9

    • LI Lax says:

Sachem North-EI will be much higher scoring than that. I’m going with 16-14 North.

Farmingdale has a lot of talent, but they just haven’t come together. I saw them against SWR last Saturday night and they just looked terrible. Their offense just moved the ball around the perimeter, no movement off the ball or any ability to dodge. Defense was OK (Ostrander is legit), but they wouldn’t be able to hang with the top 5-6 in Suffolk A. Pequa is probably the favorite at this point in Nassau A and they lost to Connetquot in OT last week. They have some solid wins though and their only other loss was to Chaminade.

    • nvrwas says:

Pequa and ‘Dale just finished a thriller, Pequa 9-8 in OT. 2 well coached team that I’m sure will see each other again at Hofstra. Syosset and Hicksville will be there as well.

  5. F&MviaTP says:

Luster is off the broncos..got here @ 4-4. Tigers gave one up one @ the end of the half to make it 5-4 & one in the early 3rd 6-4,but the Tigers look like they are here to stay 6-5

  6. F&MviaTP says:

6-6 this unheralded Tiger team is hanging w/ the mighty undefeated bville team… Make it 7-6 look out!!! Tiger’s are here to play broncos coach is very upset w/ the officials

  7. LI Lax says:

Connetquot with a 2-0 lead on WM in the second

  8. F&MviaTP says:

Bvlle will start man up for 30. 4th Near scores 8-7. Blue chippper being heard! Assists on the next 8-8

  9. Joe Lombardi says:

Mamaroneck leads Bronxville 8-6 after three. Connor Ferguson has been “a one-man ball-stripping machine,” according to a text message I just received.

  10. Lax Dad says:

Any WI – Northport score yet?

  11. F&MviaTP says:

Near is carrying his team w/ great catch & release passing. Tigers are up to the task fight off back to back man ups by bvlle but finally give one up 9-9 make it 10-9 tigers 3:23…tigers man down AGAIN unbelievable

  12. Joe Lombardi says:

Bronxville and Mamaroneck are now tied 10-10 with less than two minutes remaining. The Broncos’ last two goals were EMOs.

  13. F&MviaTP says:

Bvlle scores another man up goal to tie it at 10 w/ 1:31.

  14. F&MviaTP says:

Ref calls tiger goalie for warding off & gives him a penalty last 14 seconds guess what? Man down for tigers. Thank goodness bvl doesn’t score on a 2nd goalie w/ no warm up

  15. F&MviaTP says:

OT tigers goalie still in the box..coach calls TO to get him back in would not of been good to lose w/ that scenario 2nd OT starting

  16. F&MviaTP says:

1st loss for the great broncos 11-10..tigers won on a loose ball pick up…ground balls win games!!!

  17. just laxin says:

Wow. Thats tough for Bronxville but now people can tone down the chatter on them a little bit. They are a decent team with 2 studs who is around the 10-15 range in Section 1. Right where most people figured they were. They can still win C for sure of course in a real weak Class C year. They have to be favored but in now way dominant.

    • F&MviaTP says:

Are you sure..someone has em @ 5 right behind Town, Pac, Somers & either LP or JJ? Apparently, Somers & Iona ducked playing them & bvlle beat somers in a scrimmage, which sounded recent.

      • U R What UR Record sez U R says:

Fact IP beat Bronxville 2007,2008,2009 and 2010.
        BXV has never beat IP.
IP used to get the wrap that they played a soft schedule, same as BXV is hearing this year.
As the program has evolved you no longer see that written because Coach Trizano has consistently looked for the toughest schedule.
Not sure which game IP should have gave up this season as to not “DUCK” BXV? Somers, FP, Rye, Chaminade, Don Bosco Prep, Holy Trinity, St Anthony’s, Bergen Catholic or John Jay.

Somers plays Ridgefeild, NC, Rye, PAC, Niskayuna, CSH, PV, Yorktown, LP and JJ.

BXV has an excellent team. Coming off this season they show have no issue getting a stronger schedule next year. That is on your Coach.

        Nobody is ducking BXV

        • F&MviaTP says:

Just reporting what I pick up on this blog. I don’t have a dog in this fight. I’m sure the bvlle kids wish they could play rye & get some type of redemption after being dismissed fr last yrs playoffs. I know Iona plays a tough sched. You are who you play & bvlle’s bloggers say no one would play them

        • F&MviaTP says:

Guess the insinuation is Iona didn’t want that to change vs the best bronco team ever. I wasn’t the one who blogged this supposed “ducking”

  18. LI Lax says:

According to some reports…Northport blew an 8-2 second half lead and lost 11-9 at WI.

  19. gimme a stick says:

    F&MviaTP says:
April 29, 2011 at 6:08 pm Ref calls tiger goalie for warding off & gives him a penalty last 14 seconds guess what? Man down for tigers. Thank goodness bvl doesn’t score on a 2nd goalie w/ no warm up

Since when is warding off anything but change of possession?
    Great win for mamo btw.

    • Mamaroneck says:

      Delay of game

    • F&MviaTP says:

I was told he threw the ball after the ward & got a delay call but still to box the goalie w/ that call w/ game on the line..not good..just change possession. Can’t wait for all the comments though

      • Mamaroneck says:

I totally agree. However, we still came out and beat them in the end

        • F&MviaTP says:

Love your team especially #6…tough Dman..real leader… He told team ground balls & hustle would win & was right! Great job by the coaches on down!!!!

          • Mamaronecka says:

            Ya great player.

          • South of 287 says:

Refs were atrocious almost giving Bville the game. Mamo D played very well, and O was able to break down from X. #10 on Ville has a rifle of a shot. #6 – Mamo was out against W. Plains and N Rockalnd (both losses). Get back top attackman tomorrow against By Hills under the lights (been out all season) Great atmosphere at the new field.

          • SWLAX says:

#6 is a stud for Mamo, goalie played very well for Mamo, refs were terrible both ways. Good win for Mamo. Let’s see how the Broncos bounce back.

          • Lowes says:

who is their top attackman that they are getting back for tonights game? thought petey conley was mamo’s top attackman?

          • Mamaroneck says:

No, Petey Conley is a middie. Josh Trachtenberg is the top attackmen, but hes returning next week against Scarsdale, not tonight.

          • lower westchestor lacrosse says:

#22 Connor Mckeon is also a good supporting attackmen. he has been feeling alittle off this year due to Trachtenbergs injury. the 2 attackmen have been playing on the same line together since 6th grade. Mckeon has one hell of a shot and is a great feeder, Mckeon has alot of work to do if he wants to play at curry next year he has to work on his dodge, his left hand and also has to hit the weight room. if he does all those things look for him having a very good lacrosse career

      • Mamaroneck says:

        I totally agree. Bad call.

      • lax says:

that was actually a smart delay of game to take even with the penalty because on the re-start it would have been a race to the goal. Smart risk to take because he might not have gotten the penalty but the right call by the ref because it prevented the breakaway

  20. Section 1 says:

I got the chance to see a good section 1 matchup this afternoon. Edgemont @ Ardsley. Ardsley started slow but got very strong midfield play. #2 on ardsley won every face-off he took and was a one man wrecking crew on offense. For edgemont #22 played well but they could get anything going because of the faceoff dominance. The Emont D played solid but Ardsley’s attack is nothing to fear especially with their ball control issues but overall a hard fought class C game! Good work boys

    Ardsley 8 Edgemont 4

    • lower westchestor lacrosse says:

ardsleys defense is at its prime for this year with a couple of very hard hitting d-poles.

  21. yeahbuddy says:

Any update on HT v Iona Prep?

  22. Joe Lombardi says:

    Put Valley – 1-0-2-4=7
    Somers – 5-3-4-3=15

    Putnam Valley scoring:

Johnny Van de Veerdonk -1g 1a
    Johnny Warden- 2g
    Rob Pasquale -1g
    Mike Walsh- 1g
    Alex Bronzo-1g
    Mike Benvenuti -1g

    Saves

    Kyle Christopher -26

    Somers scoring:

    Kieran Donohue – 3g 1a
    Anthony Lombardo – 1g 1a
    Kevin Cousin – 2g 1a
    Brett Emanuel – 2g 2a
    Chris Rios -2g
    Alex Corpolongo- 1g 1a
    Chris Marasco – 1a

    John Cegielski – 1g
    Anthony Carpenter – 1g 1a

    Saves

    Chris Cousin -7
    Jordan DeVito – 2

  23. Tuskerville says:

FMviaTP- Your absolutely right Somers Ducked Mamaroneck to play Nisky, Ridgefield and Carthage. AND Donohue, Lombardo, and Schurr did not play in the Bronxville scrimmage. Enjoy your win!!!

    • F&MviaTP says:

You misunderstood..someone on this blog said somers, Iona & implied that top section teams that played bvl last year…would not play bvlle this yr & risk the loss..they also blogged that bvlle & somers scrimmaged & bvlle outplayed them. You have to look back in the blogs. It was part of a discussion about bvlle not playing anyone. The excuse was that no one wanted to play them. I think town played em last yr. Guess the huskers were part of the conspiracy to not play the new powerhouse bronco team

    • F&MviaTP says:

Ck back a week ago to a day that featured bvlle. I’m an observer. I never believed the tuskers, Iona or any of the traditionally better teams would duck bvlle but according to their bloogers nobody but Fordham would give this extremely talented bronco team a game. I gather it has to do w/ not wanting to lose to them. I guess w/ one ND & one Gtown recruit they are extremely dangerous

    • F&MviaTP says:

I know somers is the real deal…last time I checked JJ was starting for ‘cuse @ attack

    • laxforfun says:

FMviaTP was talking about Bronxville as they keep yapping about how all section 1 top teams are ducking them because for 1 year they are good. I totally agree with the schedule Somers not ducking anyone. If anyone knows Lew he doesn’t really show his hand in scrimmages and mixes and matches so much players aren’t even sure who is playing where.

  24. sowapa says:

Any Greeley – John Jay score, stats, recap?

  25. J-G says:

    Jay 10, Greeley 2.

  26. slacrosse says:

    Saw the Bville/Mamo game. Comments.

Congrats to Mamo on their win. Done is a very unspectacular but plugging aggressive blue-collar way.

    1) I’ve been to many lax games this season watching the top teams in CT and Section 1. I have to say that #24, Connor Furgeson, Pole, probably played the most dominating game at his position I’ve seen this season. Stripping, ground balls, face-offs. He was a huge plus for Mamo taking the mo away from Bville on many occasions. He also won most of the FO’s he took. I knew this kid was very good, and he showed me that today (and as a hockey player as well) Where is this kid going to school???
    2) Mamo’s goalie made some great saves.
    3) Couple solid O players bur particularly like #26, Conley
    4) Mamo won most of the ground balls and aside from Ferguson, they were stripping the Bville players as well.

    Bville
You could tell they had some very talented O players. They were getting set up for shots but ended up with way too many missed passes and off target shots. In fairness I’m sure their O can play better and if they had, would have put in some more goals–but they didn’t. Defense looked pourous-missing slides, backing up, etc.

I’m wondering why Mamo has lost certain of their games this season but the team I saw play today is capable of doing some major damage in the Class A play-offs.

    • section 1 says:

furgeson is going to suny brockport to play next year

    • WoW says:

true that! How do you beat Bronxville after you’ve lost to North Rockland???? Really-thats tough to explain? Were Mamo players on spring break , were they sick?

    • Mamaroneck says:

They have been dealing with some big injuries, but there starting to get healthy. look for them to make serious noise later coming up

      • WoW says:

The “noise” at Mamo was quiet last night as they lost to BH 7-4 and it wasnt even that close. I guess they were hungover after their big win over Bronxville.

    • lax says:

you’re completely wrong about 24 winning most of the faceoffs. He lost the majority by a long shot so much that he stopped going for ball in the second half and charging the other man’s body. Bronxville owned the faceoffs that game no question

      • slacrosse says:

Disagree unless you have stats to contrary. He didn’t take FO’s to start. But even if he lost more then won, he dominated big time in every other part of the game he was involved in.

  27. Long Time Laxer says:

Mamk is very young this year. While they have some great players on D, they have had a difficult time clearing the ball mostly because of a lack of patience. You can’t play D for 30-35 minutes and still win. On O they get Josh Trachtenberg back who will settle things down and is a good distributor and take a lot of the load off Peter Conley.

  28. slacrosse says:

Hey good to see not all Mamo hockey players play baseball!

Also impressed with the large # of young lax kids waiting to play after the game. Looks like Mamo lax has a good future going for it.

    • Lax Rules says:

Youth program is exploding – program should have very solid ‘lower’ section (Southern Sec. 1) talent with some studs every now and then.

  29. Down State lax says:

Now may be we can talk about other teams, now that Bronxville lost.Seeing that everybody else would not play them.HMMMMMMMMMMMM

    • F&MviaTP says:

Bville’s the new lower westchester power..best team they’ve ever had. Their bloggers are confident they will blow thru C especially w/ rye out of the way & they have a tremendous chance to win it all now that Manhasset is out of their way too I guess. Can anyone play w/ this team? Yesterday must of been a fluke. Their bloggers say “let their play speak for them” I gather they’re regrouping right now getting ready for another coming out party….

  30. Long Time laxer says:

I don’t think we saw the best that Bronxville could play yesterday. I guess my only concern is their defense. Mamk doesn’t have a lot of O weapons and B’ville still gave up 11 goals. B’ville will have to play much better defense to get past whomever comes off the Island in C

    • F&MviaTP says:

I’m watching the woodstick…bville would get killed by “set” they’re very lucky they aren’t in C. Doubt broncos would get out of sect 1 if rye was still in C. I have confidence an upstate team or an island team will beat the ville

      • sectone says:

‘Set would beat most regardless of class – so yes Bronxville dodged a bullet. With that said I think they are a great story – and as a Section 1 fan I’ll be rooting for them.

I do agree with your statement. Skaneateles and Penn Yan are quality upstate teams and CSH from the island is a top notch team (lost to ‘Set by 1, Somers by 2).

You can’t lose to Mamo (no offense) and expect to beat an Island champ or an upstate champ.

  31. F&MviaTP says:

Why should bville worry about their D w/ a faceoff kid that hardly ever gets beat & an O that’s so dominant, they should have the ball most of the time & can’t be beat? Apparently, they’re rolling thru C & will be dominant down the line. Sounds like they’re headed to another state championship just like in football

  32. Long Time laxer says:

Personally, I hope B’ville does win the States. But to think they will roll thru the Island and whomever comes from upstate is pretty arrogant.

    • laxer 6 says:

i personnally hope they lose. they play a weak schedule they wnt be ready for any LI competition
